BookFest is Back!

The Friends of the Bowen Island Library volunteers present BookFest, a giant sale of quality used books and media, held in the gym at Bowen Island Community School.

This is a great time to shop for gifts for others and yourself. Prices are very reasonable and the selection is huge! On Sunday, bring a box and fill it with books for only $10!

All proceeds benefit the Bowen Island Public Library.

Pride Season Kickoff:
Crafting + Mini Pride Parade

Saturday, June 3, 2023 | 1 pm

Come craft mini floats and flags with us! Then we’ll parade them around the Library to celebrate the start of Pride Season!

1 pm — Craft a mini float or flag

2 pm — Mini Pride Parade followed by snacks & celebration

Crafting supplies provided, but feel free to bring your own photos, decorations, flags, or a favourite toy to ride in your float! Wearing bright clothing is also encouraged!

Come out for the Green Man Festival of yore—resurrected and re-imagined! A team of dedicated Bowen youth have brought back this much-loved festival for the community.

Join them at 11 am outside the Bowen Library, and see whether the Ice Queen and the icicles or the Green Man and the buds will win the most epic battle of the season(s)!

Theatre! Taekwondo! Crafts! Music! And so much more!

Supported by the Bowen Island Library, The Hearth Gallery, Bowen Island Municipality, and Bowen Island Taekwondo, and with financial support from the Bowen Island Comunity Foundation.

Final Book Donation Day!

Sunday, May 7, 2023 | 10:30 am

Donations of clean, good condition used books and DVDs can be brought to the Bowen Island Library Annex starting at 10:30 am, going until volunteers' bins are full (no later than 12:30 pm).

A Friends of the Library volunteer will pre-screen your donations while you wait and will accept those that meet donation guidelines. Donors will need to take back any items that do not meet the guidelines.

This is the final book donation date until volunteers resume in the fall.

Thank you for all your donations this year, and be sure to check out the BookFest Book Sale at the BICS Gym on May 20, 21, & 22.

Explore how communication is affected by dementia and learn effective communication strategies.

This session is intended for caregivers of a person living with dementia to discuss strategies and learn more about how to best communicate as a caregiver.

Author Talk: Rosella M. Leslie

Saturday, May 27, 2023 | 2 pm

Hailing from the Sunshine Coast, Rosella M. Leslie will speak on her candid, compassionate and sometimes humorous 2022 memoir Losing Us: A Dementia Caregiver's Journey (Quintessential Publishing), about her heartbreaking struggles and triumphs as her husband’s primary caregiver.

The book is also an informal guide to dementia caregiving, including helpful resources for caregivers, their friends, families and communities.

Rosella has published seven books of fiction and non-fiction, including The Cougar Lady: Legendary Trapper of Sechelt Inlet (Caitlin Press), and The Federov Legacy (Caitlin Press), and co-authored A Stain Upon the Sea: West Coast Salmon Farming (Harbour Publishing).

French Connections: May & June Dates Added

Sundays, May 14 & June 11, 2023 | 1:00 pm

Fun and friendly conversation practice in French! Drop in and join us to practice your French, and get to know other French speakers on Bowen Island.

The focus is on beginner and intermediate speakers, but all levels welcome.

Runs 1-2 pm, but participants are welcome to stay longer if the conversation is still rolling!

Seniors Keeping Young (SKY) and Bowen Island Public Library invite you to join us for tea/coffee and fun and friendly games in the cozy Library Annex.

Anyone aged 55+ can come enjoy a variety of tabletop and card games: Bridge, Mah Jong, chess, cards, UNO, Boggle, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Rummikub, Catan, brain games, and more!

Free to participate, SKY membership not required.

Good for your brain, great for your soul!

Drop in for a WorkBC Career Advisor session at the Bowen Island Library! Come get one-on-one help with resumes, cover letters, interviewing, job searches, insights on the job market, career and education advice, and more from Janice, a WorkBC Career Advisor.

This free drop-in service is in the Library Flex Room from 11 am-2 pm on the 4th Tuesday of the month. May 23 and June 27 are our final spring dates, with more dates resuming in the fall.
