Environment Canada is calling for flurries of both rain and snow this week in Nanaimo. Be aware of changing temperatures and conditions. Please drive, walk and cycle with extra caution and stay a safe distance from the City of Nanaimo winter maintance vehicles.

Harbour City Seniors Open House

Parks, Recreation and Culture is hosting an Open House at Bowen Park on Wednesday, Nov. 30 from 2 to 4 pm to showcase the many programs offered for adults 60+. A Nanaimo Harbour City Membership is only $45 for the year and allows you to register for any of the programs for FREE or at a lower cost.

Nominations are due by Friday, Dec. 2. Award recipients will be recognized at a special celebration at the Port Theatre in April 2023.

Green Giveaway 

The City of Nanaimo is currently running a giveaway on both Instagram and Facebook, encouraging the community to make memories, not waste.

Get in the mindset to reduce, reuse, recycle, recover and play along for your chance to win a $50 Parks, Recreation and Culture Gift Card. All you have to do is share an experience gift you've given or received and tag a person you'd like to give an experience to. If your name is randomly selected, both you and the person you've tagged will win. The contest closes Nov. 30 at noon.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

  • Along the Nanaimo Parkway, between East Wellington Road and Northfield Road, construction crews continue to break rock and fuse pipe for the Midtown Water Supply Project. Commuters should expect merging construction traffic entering the Nanaimo Parkway south of Northfield Road.
  • Trench Preparations will begin along Northfield Road, between the Nanaimo Parkway and Northfield Marsh before Boxwood Road construction crews will be breaking rock along the south shoulder, commuters can expect visual distractions and minor delays. Commuters should expect minor delays along Boxwood Road between Meredith Road and Tulsa Road in relation to the Midtown Water Supply Project.
  • Beban Park has detours within the park and areas of restricted access for the Midtown Water Supply Project. Access to the Stevie Smith Bike Park and Community Gardens is off Bowen Road past the tennis courts and golf course. All main parking lots, facilities and park amenities are open. In an effort to protect the public and provide a safe working area, certain areas of the park are fenced off and restricted for all non-construction personnel.
  • Labieux Road between Beban Parkway and Kenworth Road will be closed in both directions for the Midtown Water Supply Project. The road closure will be in place for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Access is available for local traffic and emergency vehicles only. Commuters should plan an alternate route. A detour will be in place and the closure will remain in effect until mid-January.
  • Emerald Drive (from Uplands to Ross Rd) will be closed during the day for a water main upgrade. Access will be limited to residents, buses and emergency services. Other commuters should plan an alternate route.
  • Metral Drive is substantially complete! Please respect traffic control as the workers finish off road markings and other important details.
