What's happening on the ground (and behind the scenes) at the site of the new campus
If you pass by the site of The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus, you’ll notice a flurry of activity – and that’s not a cold weather reference, we promise!
Construction is progressing on the parking garage and site preparation is ongoing for the main hospital. Teams are working to build one of the main entrances into the new campus at the intersection of Carling Avenue and Champagne Avenue. This work is expected to be completed by the new year.
The large structure now in place near Preston Street and Prince of Wales Drive is the east side of the parking garage that will support the new hospital. The west side of the garage will go up soon and the two will be connected as a single structure over the top of the LRT trench.
Some might ask – why build the parking garage BEFORE the main hospital building?
It’s simple, really: building the parking garage first means we’ll have parking available for patients when the new hospital opens. It will also provide parking for workers on site, helping to prevent congestion on neighbourhood streets during the project.
Less noticeable to people passing by the site is the work being done behind the scenes. We’ve been working with the development company since February 2024 to finalize designs, costs and schedule for the main hospital – a phase of design development that will continue for the next year or so. Our work to finalize designs also includes feedback from community stakeholders and guidance from Indigenous partners to ensure the new campus will meet the diverse needs of the people we serve.
