Virtual Fall Graduation
(Graduating Students)

November 25, 2020 | 3:00pm PST

Congratulations to all our KIN students who have completed their degree requirements and who graduate on November 25th! Due to the continued COVID-19 pandemic, UBC will hold one virtual graduation ceremony for all graduates on the UBC Vancouver campus. UBC's new Chancellor, the Honourable Steven Point (xwĕ lī qwĕl tĕl), will preside over the graduation ceremony.

2:30pm PST: Pre-Show and Ceremony Countdown

3:00pm PST: Celebration of the Annual Fall Graduation

Graduating students, families and all members of the UBC Vancouver campus community are invited to attend the virtual online ceremony here.  

UBC will hold an in-person graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020, when it is safe to do so.

KIN Student Awards Ceremony
(Undergraduate Students - Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4)

The Annual 2020 Student Awards Ceremony is an event that recognizes KIN undergraduate students who are recipients of scholarships, awards and prizes and also salutes the generous donors and supporters of the School. For information on awards and scholarships available in the School to you, click here.

The Student Awards night typically takes place in November, but has been postponed, and will now take place in January 2021. Confirmation of the date and time will be announced soon. Please stay tuned!

 

Campus Safety During COVID-19
(Undergraduate and Graduate Students)

The health and safety of the UBC community is our first priority, and we continue to monitor COVID-19 and follow effective safety practices as our understanding of the virus evolves.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Travel Restrictions
(Undergraduate and Graduate International Students)

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has amended the travel restrictions for international students that have taken effect as of October 29, 2020. Most students may now travel, however, new students who haven’t received their final study permit approval will need to continue to wait.

If you are an international student planning to come to UBC during the winter session, the UBC Student Services has updated the FAQs, the Travelling to Canada Guide and all international students at UBC-V have been emailed UBC’s self-isolation plans and Residence info provided by Housing.

For questions, connect with UBC International Student Advising email isa@students.ubc.ca, and include your student number in the subject line, or connect on Zoom from Monday to Friday, 9:30am - 4:00pm.

Student Mentees Share their Experiences in
The Kinesiology Mentorship Program

(Undergraduate Students - Y1, Y2, Y3)

The Kinesiology Mentorship Program supports undergraduate students become career-ready graduates by connecting student participants with mentors who are KIN alumni, to share experiences, develop professional skills and expand their network. This year’s program has already begun. However, we thought you'd like to hear directly from the students about their motivations for joining and their experiences as mentees so that you might consider joining the Program next year. Below are the first in a series of student profiles and what these students hope to get from participating in the Mentorship Program. We hope to see you in the Mentorship Program next year!

UPCOMING EVENTS

UBC Exercise, Kinesiology and Health Seminar Program:
Careers After Graduate School and 
Exercise for Brain Health

(Graduate Students and Y3, Y4 Undergraduate Students)

November 4 and 18, 2020 | 3:30pm-4:30pm PST

In collaboration with UBC-O's School of Health and Exercise Sciences, the UBC Exercise, Kinesiology and Health Seminar Program is a forum for critical academic discussion between students and faculty members from all disciplines.

The seminar series will take place every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30pm - 4:30pm. The first seminar this month takes place on Wednesday, November 4th with Mike Kennefick, Maria Gallo, Matt Dolf, Chantelle Murnaghan, and Mary Jung to discuss "Careers after Graduate School," and on Wednesday, November 18th with Dr. Jennifer Heisz, whose topic is "Exercise for Brain Health."

UBC Webinar: The connection between physical activity, the brain, and overall well-being during COVID-19.
(Undergraduate and Graduate Students)

November 16, 2020, 12:00pm-1:00pm PST

Presented in partnership with AlumniUBC, the Faculty of Medicine and the UBC School of Kinesiology.

Being physically active is as good for the mind as it is for the body. In fact, the BC Provincial Health Authority recommends that people stay active during the COVID-19 pandemic to help support overall well-being. In this webinar, we will explore the role that different types of physical activity play in improving stamina, resilience, sleep, cognitive function, and how we feel and think in our everyday lives. Learn how physical activity affects the brain and helps us manage stress and trauma. Discover professional approaches to starting or maintaining a physically active lifestyle in this time of physical distancing, uncertainty and seasonal change.

Speakers include professors Eli Puterman (Kinesiology) and Teresa Liu-Ambrose (Medicine).

THRIVE
(Undergraduate and Graduate Students)

November 1-30, 2020

Thrive is an annual UBC program that allows all of us to come together as a community to learn about and explore ways to support our mental health. 

The past few months have presented us with many changes and challenges to our daily lives and as a result, to our mental health. So while Thrive will look different this year (no puppy-petting parties or UBC’s Largest Spin Class), it is more important than ever for each of us to foster and maintain mental health.

Learn about the 5 ways that can help promote a healthy mind called the Thrive 5+. These are simple, easy-to-implement ways to help support your mental health.

Medicine Panel Session Hosted by the KUS

Looking to hear from medical students and doctors from a variety of specialties? Have questions about going to med school?

Then you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss the KUS Professional Development Team’s Med panel session! At this event, you will be greeted by a panel of currently practicing physicians and medical students, ready to share their experiences in medicine. The agenda will include a structured Q&A, answering broad and common questions that many of you have asked, and then it will move into an open Q&A period where you can ask whatever you are left wondering. Open to all students, so make sure you don’t miss out on this informative event!

Veterans’ Week 2020, November 5 to 11 – How Will You Remember?
(Undergraduate and Graduate Students)

For the past sixty-nine years, since the opening of the War Memorial Gym in 1951, UBC has held a ceremony commemorating November 11th. This special ceremony is an opportunity for our UBC community to honour and remember all those who served in times of war, military conflict and peace.

The UBC Gender Equity & STEM Conference 2020
(Undergraduate and Graduate Students)

November 14, 2020 | 9:15am-2:45pm PST

The main goal of this conference is to advance dialogue around gender inclusion and equality in STEM fields with regards to women and other gender-oppressed communities and equip attendees with the inspiration to tackle the STEM gender gap in their own spheres.

Join the Virtual Town Hall: Help Shape UBC’s Plan to Advance Health Across BC and Beyond
(Undergraduate and Graduate Students) 

November 18 and 19, 2020

The Office of the Vice-President, Health (UBC Health) invites you to a Virtual Town Hall to join the discussion about our strategic plan. UBC Health works to help enhance the health of people and communities through education, research, and innovation. By facilitating closer linkages and collaborations across disciplines and sectors, UBC Health strengthens the university’s capacity for excellence in health.

TwoTown Hall sessions will be held for those who are interested in participating in the development of the strategic plan that is being produced. Each session will begin with a short presentation on the current situation and the draft framework, followed by opportunities for feedback and questions. It is now critical that we open the conversation further to shape the plan through engagement with the broader UBC Health community.

The Town Halls will be held on:

OPPORTUNITIES

Participants Needed: UBC Indigenous Research Project
(Undergraduate and Graduate Students)   

Dr. Tal Jarus, of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy, invites students, staff, and faculty with at least 1 year of experience in the health and human service professions and who self-identify as Indigenous, to participate in a study that investigates the barriers and facilitators of Indigenous people in the health and human service field. The goal is to better understand those barriers and facilitators by hosting a sharing circle. The sharing circle will last approximately 1-1.5 hours and will be held remotely using Zoom. Participants must be 19 years of age or older and will be compensated for their time.
