Dear friends and colleagues,
I have the privilege of addressing you today to celebrate our national holiday, la Fête nationale du Québec. The relationship between Québec and the Midwest is very unique. Our office has been in Chicago for 50 years, and together, not only do we represent the 4th largest economy in the world, but the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region in and of itself holds roughly 20% of the earth's freshwater resources. In addition to that, each year the trade between Québec and the Midwest totals an average of $20 billion. These figures remind us how much stronger we are when we work together.
As we have seen, once again, during these difficult times, our economies are deeply integrated. This is a significant asset to our region as we think about the protection of our supply chains and supporting each other in periods of turbulence like the one we are facing now. For example, to help combat Covid-19, Canada has exported over $5 billion of goods to the United States, 25% of which came from Québec.
We have been here for each other, through good times and bad, over the past 50 years, and we are committed to nurturing these ties in the Midwest for the 50 years to come. I look forward to reconnecting, rebuilding, and supporting one another as we adapt to new ways of doing business. There is much work to do and so many shared values to continue to cultivate.
Meanwhile bonne fête nationale à toutes et à tous!
