Air safety capsule: Loss of control and collision with terrain, TSB report A21Q0083

On 12 September 2021 , a Piper J3C-65 equipped with floats was on a flight from the Batiscan River near the Seigneurie du Triton, 25 nautical miles east-northeast of the municipality of La Tuque, Quebec, to the Saint-Étienne-des- Grès / Seaplane Aventure hydrobase, Quebec. Shortly after the southbound takeoff, the aircraft entered a left turn at low altitude and collided with trees about 100 feet from the east bank of the river. The pilot was seriously injured and the passenger was fatally injured. The aircraft was destroyed.

CAUTION : CYA Joliette area

CAUTION DROP ZONES

Hello fellow pilots

Please note that the parachute season will begin on the weekend of April 30. The CYAs in the Joliette and St-Esprit region will be active by NOTAM from the ground to 18,000 feet. It is important to understand that these drop zones are the busiest in Canada and that the risks associated with large numbers of jumpers and drop planes are high inside these CYAs.

For everyone's safety, please avoid entering a CYA (P) when it is active.

Thank you!

Jocelyn Brunet, Chief Pilot, Aerobatics Skydiving School

An update: Major change to Common Frequency Areas (CFA) around Montreal coming June 19, 2022

NEW: We have obtained a copy of the Aeronautical Information Circular 14/22, formalizing this change, which will be published on May 19th.

You fly in the Montreal area or plan to do so, you must consult this circular by clicking   HERE . Your safety and that of other users of this airspace depends on it.

All relevant information will also be found in up-to-date aeronautical publications such as VTA (VFR Terminal Area Chart), VNC (VFR Aeronautical Navigation Chart) and Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) charts. Be sure to confirm that your electronic flight bag (Foreflight or FlightPlan Go) has this new information.

So, on May 19, 2022, two CFAs come into effect, covering a large area up to 50 NM from Montreal.

The zones are shown in the image above. The two areas extend from the ground up to 5,500 ASL (elevation above sea level) and are separated by the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. The frequency of CFA Montréal-Nord is 122.1 MHz. The frequency of CFA Montréal-Sud is 122.575 MHz.

And the 2022 contest is back! And, we have a new pricing structure:

  • Annual price:
    • First prize: $150 gift certificate + trophy
    • Second: $100 gift certificate + trophy
    • Third prize: $50 gift certificate + trophy

You can now send us photos by writing to us at photos@aviateurs.quebec

You have until April 30 at 10 p.m. to send us your photos. IT'S SATURDAY !

On the subject of photo resolution… most “smart” phones take photos in acceptable resolution and even “high” resolution. But often, the email software used is set to send only low resolution previews. This can be corrected by the user… You can also go through a manipulation by copying the photo and pasting it into the message. It is also possible to use WeTransfer, MailDrop from Apple, Google Drive in Gmail or OneDrive from Microsoft.

THE IMPORTANT is:

  • Give a TITLE to the photo
  • Give the full NAME of the PHOTOGRAPHER
  • Give YOUR full NAME
  • Give your member NUMBER (IN RULE).

For the rest, we will consider that you have read and accepted the rules when you participate...

Contest rules are HERE
