Each year, UBC Okanagan faculties award a student with the University of BC Medal for the Head of Graduating Class. In the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, this award is presented to the top student based on their academic performance throughout their program.

The Okanagan School of Education is pleased to announce that this year’s 2022 recipient, is Anica McIntosh!

“Anica displayed characteristics of a true scholar-practitioner. She was actively engaging in furthering her professional growth throughout the practicum.

Graduate Student Spotlight on Alma Betancourth

“I had wanted to work on something that I could eventually implement in a more practical way,” says Betancourth. “It really helped that I was clear on what the project would be from the get-go, because that made my research very focused and intentional.”

The Right to Higher Education: A Q&A with Dr. Christopher Martin

Should a person’s right to education end after high school? Dr. Christopher Martin’s recent book, The Right to Higher Education sets out a novel account of the point and purpose of higher education, something that has been a controversial debate both in public settings and in policy.

"The book asks what post-compulsory/higher education in a free and open society ought to look like. The answer is that access to education should be a basic entitlement of any and all adult citizens over their entire lifespan."

Summer Institute in Education

Summer Institute in Education (SIE) courses provide the unique opportunity of connecting certified teachers, graduate students and teacher candidates in classes together. Courses are offered in a multitude of formats (indoors, outdoors, online and face to face) and are relevant to current trends and needs in education. For educators, courses in the SIE program can be used towards certificates, diplomas, graduate programs, professional development and upgrading requirements.

July 4 – July 21 (Monday to Thursday)
9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Format: In-person

Engage in activities that exercise thinking routines, apply relevant routines to a unit of study, and create a physical or digital escape room.

Exploring Hands-On Classroom Gardening as Science Curriculum

July 4 – July 21 (Monday to Thursday)
1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Format: In-person

Focus on gardening in this hands-on science curriculum course! Create a garden and learn the skills of creating garden beds and flats, germinating seeds, basic deadheading and propagating.

Introduction to Social Emotional Learning (SEL) for Educators

July 4 – July 21 (Monday to Thursday)
1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Format: In-person

Examine the five social-emotional learning competencies; self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making as they relate to the core competencies.
