Did you know?

The City is contracted by Recycle BC to collect curbside recycling. Recycle BC is funded by the producers of residential packaging and paper, through an extended producer responsibility (EPR) program legislated by the Province under the Recycling Regulation in the Environmental Management Act.

Scrap Metal

Aluminum and steel packaging, such as foil take out containers and tin cans, are accepted in your blue cart. However, all metal products and scrap metal are not.

It's amazing what has been spotted going through Recycle BC's sorting facilities - frying pans, lawnmower blades and even a kitchen sink! Not only are these items not included in Recycle BC's program, they are dangerous for workers and cause damage to belts and other machinery.

Books

Did you know? Hardcover and paperback books, such as novels and text books are not accepted in your blue cart. If you have extra books you would like to get rid of, here are some options:

  • Resell, hand down, donate or place in one of Nanaimo's little libraries so that someone else can enjoy them.
  • Many libraries, thrift stores and community organizations will accept gently used books, but be sure to call first to ensure there is a need.

Use the What Goes Where wizard on the Nanaimo Recycles app to find out where you can take your scrap metal and other products not accepted in the blue cart.

Mid-Town Water Supply Project - Stating Soon!

The Mid-Town Water Supply Upgrades Project is a major, multi-year project that will upgrade Nanaimo’s water supply infrastructure, supporting resilience and ensuring a safe supply of water to two-thirds of the City.

The project will ensure that Nanaimo Regional General Hospital has a dedicated potable water and fire protection feed, and also serves to support active transportation provisions in City Plan by providing a future active transportation trailway link between the E&N and Parkway Trails along the pipe’s route.

Construction should start in early summer, with early work clearing minor trees expected to start on March 3, prior to the spring bird nesting period. This will include sections along the Nanaimo Parkway from East Wellington to Northfield Road and through Beban Park. Please obey all safety warning signs and cordoned off areas during this activity.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

  • Ninth Street is closed between Bruce Avenue and Plecas Crescent. Detours will be in place and commuters are asked to plan their travel accordingly and account for extra time when navigating the area.
  • Metral Drive is still an active construction site, so please expect delays and account for extra time when navigating the area. Metral Drive from Enterprise Way to Turner Road is now LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY. The road will be narrow while crews prepare to install curbs on both sides of the road, so please detour on Highway 19a. If you live in the area or are visiting a business, drive slowly and respect the construction zone and workers.
  • Watermain upgrades are underway on Laguna Way east of the intersection with Lost Lake Road. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Utility upgrades are taking place on Cottleview Drive and Hillside Avenue between Caldwell Street and Pacific Edge Way. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Nottingham Drive is closed between Hammond Bay Road and Cumberland Place. Commuters should plan to access Nottingham from the north end.
  • Fourth Street between Bruce Avenue and Pine Street is closed in both directions to through traffic, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Hamilton Avenue at Pine Street will be closed to southbound right turning vehicles. Local traffic is permitted. All businesses remain open and accessible. Road closures will remain in effect until May 2022 when the Fourth Street Complete Street Phase 1 project is completed.
