Apr 1: Last day for final doctoral oral examination for April 30 program end date.

Apr 8: Last day of classes for most faculties.

Apr 12 - 27: Final Exam period for most faculties.

Apr 15: University closed for Good Friday. Some branches of the Library may be open.

Apr 18: University closed for Easter Monday. Some branches of the Library may be open.

Apr 22 (May 2022 Graduating Students): Last day to complete all program requirements for non-thesis master's degrees, and for final master's theses and doctoral dissertations to be accepted by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for degrees to be conferred in May 2022 Congregation. Final theses and dissertations must be approved and accepted by 4:00 pm PDT.

Apr 28: Winter Session residences close. Residents are required to vacate by 12:00 pm (noon).

Apr 29 (May 2022 Graduating Students): Last day to finish all bachelor's degree program requirements for graduation in May 2022.

Apr 29 (Graduate Studies)Last day to complete all program requirements (including major papers) for non-thesis master's degrees, and for final master's theses and doctoral dissertations to be accepted by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for April 30 program end date. Must be approved and accepted by 4:00 pm PDT. Students who meet this deadline will not be assessed tuition and student fees for the 2022/23 Summer Session.

The United Nations observes International Sports Day each year in recognition of the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights, and social and economic development. The theme for 2022 is “Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport,” to promote the use of sport as a tool to advance human rights and sustainable development.

He is a specialist in Sport, Environment, Peace and Media within the sociocultural area of the UBC School of Kinesiology, and is the Director of the Centre for Sport and Sustainability. COVID-19 Update: Maintaining masks in UBC public indoor spaces

All students, faculty, and staff are required to wear a mask in public indoor spaces on campus until the end of the 2021/22 Winter Session on April 30, 2022.

It's strongly recommended that mask be medical grade. You can learn about the different types of masks here. You will need to wear a mask for the duration of the class, for your own protection, and for the safety and comfort of others in the class.

Exemptions, including for those unable to wear a face covering, are detailed in the Provincial Health Officer’s order. For those who need masks, they will be made available to members of the UBC community. More details can be found here. For the UBC Broadcast message click below.

Call for Undergraduate Student Representatives on the School of Kinesiology’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization (EDID) Committee 📣

The School of Kinesiology is seeking two undergraduate student representatives to be on the School’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization (EDID) Committee for 2022-23. The EDID committee will act as an advisory body with respect to issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.

Both representatives will attend monthly committee meetings (with the option of scheduling ad hoc meetings if required), assist the committee in developing, promoting and leading EDID initiatives, and liaise with other standing committees in the School.

The ideal candidate is a returning undergraduate student for Fall 2022 and will have interest, experience, competency, and commitment to promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization within the School.

Gender Bias in the Beijing Paralympic Games

A gaping gender gap in Winter Paralympic Games continues with Canada's team reflecting that imbalance. KIN professor Dr. Andrea Bundon speaks on the continuing gender disparity at the Paralympic Games:

"Many sports, like sled hockey in the Paralympics, are listed as co-ed or mixed sports but this creates a scenario where the men’s side is well-funded and the women’s side is underfunded and underdeveloped."

Congratulations to KIN PhD candidate Deana Kanagasingam on being the principal author of her study with co-supervisors, Dr. Moss Norman and Dr. Laura Hurd, titled “It's not just to treat everybody the same: A social justice framework for caring for larger patients in healthcare practice". On March 24, 2022, the article was accepted for publication in the upcoming June issue of the Sociology of Health and Illness journal.

UBC Long-Standing Tradition, Storm the Wall Event Returns and KIN Teams Meet the Challenge!

This week the legendary Storm the Wall returned to campus after a 2-year hiatus. This annual tradition traces back to 1978 and is recognized as the largest intramural event in North America. There is a growing trend among KIN students to look into developing business and entrepreneurial skills. More students are undertaking the dual degree in KIN and the Master of Management degree. Still more are participating in the KUS Case Competition while others are developing business skills by exploring consultancies, producing podcasts, and joining business clubs. Summer WorkLearn: Physical Activity Office Assistant (Graduate Students)

UBC Recreation are hiring a few Work Learns over the summer to be their Physical Activity Office Assistants for the Spring/Summer with potential to extend into the Fall!

Successful candidates would assist them in contributing towards their priority targets of Move More (10% reduction in the prevalence of physical inactivity for UBC community members by 2025) and Diverse Community, Diverse Programming (10% increase in UBC community members' satisfaction with recreation facilities and programs by 2025).

These roles would be largely in-person with some potential for remote work upon discussion, and include supporting programming, literature reviews, evaluation, and general administration.

KIN Graduate Research Day! Submit Your Abstract to Participate (Graduate Students)

The 2022 KIN Graduate Research Day is an annual conference organized by the graduate representatives and the School of Kinesiology for grad students to present their research. All students (graduate and undergraduate) are encouraged to submit an abstract.

All abstract submissions require a title, authors, presenting author’s home institution and a 250-word abstract. Abstracts can be from work that has or will be presented at another conference. Abstracts must be no longer than 250 words and submitted in word document form (.doc).

Rick Hansen Talks With UBC KIN About Accessibility and Inclusion

On March 3rd, KIN alum Rick Hansen, C.C., O.B.C. spoke with KIN professors Dr. Jasmin Ma and Dr. Andrea Bundon about accessibility and inclusion in community spaces as part of the UBC Exercise, Kinesiology, and Health Seminar Program.

In his webinar, "Accessibility and Inclusion: Unleashing the Potential of People with Disabilities", Rick and his Foundation are rethinking how people of all ages and abilities access spaces where we live, work, learn and play. The Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) is the only program that rates, certifies, and showcases accessible buildings based on their level of meaningful access for persons with mobility, vision, and hearing disabilities.

Considerations and Contributions in Female Identified Athletes

In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8th, UBC Athletics held a panel discussion on Female Athlete Health titled “Considerations and Contributions in Female Identified Athletes”. Panelists included KIN professors, Drs. Maria Gallo and Emma McCrudden.

Maria commented, “Coaching is a beautiful career path [and] there are lots of positives to it, ... but women need to be at the table when it comes to being on boards and making policies and ... having a systematic influence on what's happening in sport ... in Canada."

Emma commented, “Positive role models in sports, celebrating different sizes and shapes, and what the human body can do would be hugely advantageous to our female sporting environment."

Student Service & Leadership Recognition Awards

On March 24th, 2022, the School hosted a Student Service & Leadership Recognition event to celebrate the achievements and contributions of our many Kinesiology Student Leaders.

There were three categories of awards given out, the Student Experience Award, the Community Engagement Award, and the Qwasen Graduating Student Leadership Award, recognizing contributions from the KUS, PARC, Active Kids, Orientations, Jump Start and more.

A big thank you to all who attended the event and most importantly, a big thank you to all of our student leaders for their support of the School of Kinesiology and its students!

KIN Lounge (Undergraduate Students)

The KIN Lounge is an opportunity to learn and ask about the experiences of kinesiology alumni now working in diverse fields. This event is meant to be casual and conversational - providing students with many chances to ask alumni questions of their own.

Our speaker this session is Elaine Marshall, who is pursuing a dual degree in law and public health. She has previously worked at a drug and alcohol non-profit recovery in the Bay Area first as their Program Assistant, then as the Marketing and Development Director. Elaine will be giving an overview of her experiences for the first portion of the event, and the remaining time is available for open Q&A.
