Message From The Mayor

In his latest video to the community, Mayor Krog asks all Nanaimo residents to please comply with all the recommendations and directives from Dr. Henry and the Provincial Government. We will get through this together if we each do what is necessary to bend the curve – wear a mask, practice physical distancing, reduce social interactions to our immediate households.

Last Chance to Participate in Phase 1

The information collected during REIMAGINE NANAIMO will guide the Official Community Plan, the Parks, Recreation & Culture Plan, Active Sustainable Transportation Plan, Economic Development Strategy, Nanaimo Water Supply Strategic Plan and the Climate Action Plan. Each topic based questionnaire will take about 10 minutes to complete. The main questionnaire asks about overall thoughts and experiences in Nanaimo.

Planting trees in honour of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day

On April 22, 2020, Earth Day Canada launched its municipal tree planting relay. On the 22nd of every month until Earth Day 2021, cities across Canada are participating by pledging to plant at least 50 trees in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The City of Nanaimo took on this pledge during the month of November. Throughout the month, approximately 250 trees and 350 shrubs were planted. Douglas Fir, Red Alder, Big Leaf Maple, Giant Sequoia, Nootka Rose, Oregon Grape and Snowberry were among the new trees and shrubs added to the community's greenspaces.

Planting trees is the perfect way for cities, including Nanaimo, to highlight their dedication to addressing climate change and to reiterate their commitment to sustainability.

Students from Nanaimo District Secondary School, John Barsy Community School and Vancouver Island University Parks Canada Club planted along the Chase River and in Third Street Park.

The Cart Is On The Curb. What Happens Now?

As a Nanaimo resident, we know you take care to reduce garbage in your Black Cart, properly sort organics and recycle right. You practice the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle) and when you're in doubt, you check it out on the What Goes Where recycling directory We THANK YOU for your efforts to keep us on the path to Zero Waste, and want you to know your time and care is worth it! Here are the basics of what happens your cart contents:

  • Black Cart – Garbage is hauled to the Regional Landfill on Cedar Road, where it’s compacted and eventually covered.
  • Green Cart – Organics are delivered to a facility in Duke Point, where non-compostables are screened out, then it’s processed indoors to turn from compostables to soil.
  • Blue Cart – Recyclables are brought to a receiving facility in south Nanaimo to go through the first round of sorting.

After that, recyclables are sent to a material recovery facility in the lower mainland, where it’s sorted again, then sent to the following locations for processing:

  • Hard plastic packaging – a plastics recycling facility in the lower mainland
  • Metal containers – facilities in BC, Ontario and the United States
  • Paper and cardboard – end-markets overseas, in the United States, or in BC

Will Your Commute be Affected?

Check out the City's Current Construction Projects page for up-to-date information on City construction projects. Here are a few projects that may affect your commute:

  • Bowen Road construction is almost done! As weather permits, crews will complete road markings. In the meantime, please drive slowly and respect temporary road markings.

  • Metral Drive, between Turner Road and Godfrey Road, has been reduced to gravel and underground utility work is underway. Traffic on the gravel road will be limited to residents only. Commuters are encouraged to plan additional time to navigate the area or preferably, to avoid the area completely by detouring on the Island Highway.
