Pick Up Nomination Packages

Those interested in running as a candidate in the 2022 General Local Election will be able to pick up nomination packages for mayor, councillor & elector organizations today, August 2. Packages will be available for pick up from the Legislative Services Department located on the first floor of City Hall. Packages will also be available electronically upon request. Those picking up packages will be required to provide their name and contact information. However, their names and contact information will not be publicly released.

LIT 40 Years of Creating Community Leaders

The City of Nanaimo is commemorating 40 years of the Leaders in Traning Program. If you are a former participant, you are invited to the celebration! The event will take place at the Beban Park Social Centre on Friday, August 19, between 5-9 pm. If you are able to make it, please RSVP by emailing emily.hoppe@nanaimo.ca. We hope to see you thee!

Swim Meet at NAC

The Vancouver Island BC Summer Swimming Association Regionals are being held at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre Friday, August 5 to Sunday, August 7. During the meet there will be limited pool space and class cancellations. Visit the link below, choose drop-in and then swim for current schedules.

The Kin Pool, located in Bowen Park, is open everyday between 1-3 pm throughout the summer. However, during the swim meet there will be special Everyone Welcome Swims to take advantage of.

Friday, August 5: 1-7 ppm
Saturday, August 6: 12-7 pm
Sunday, August 7: 12-4 pm

Don't miss the last few concerts in the park! Tomorrow, August 3 Cathedral Grove Trio will be playing from 7-8 pm, downtown at McGregor Park. Take in harbour views while listening to these talented Vancouver Island Musicians. These concerts are FREE for all to enjoy. The next concerts are as follows:

Summer Vibes Quartet - August 17, 7-8 pm at McGregor Park
Eutah Mizushima - August 23, 5-6 pm at Neck Point Park

Starlight Skate

Looking for a cool activity? Skate under the stars of the passive LED glow lights at the Nanaimo Ice Centre on August 3 between 6:30-8 pm. Get your glow sticks out or purchase glow necklaces at the arena. Regular rates will apply.

Blue & Yellow Bastion

The City of Nanaimo continues to support the Ukrainian people. The Bastion will be lit in blue and yellow August 2-6 and August 8-17.

Did you know? Organizations can request the Bastion be illuminated in specific colours to promote a cause.

Hey Nanaimo, please safely dispose of cigarettes. Do not toss from car windows and do not put in planters or garden beds. Remember that smoking is not permitted in City parks or on trails. Let's prevent grass and bark mulch fires. Thank you!

Call for New Member to Board of Variance

Residents interested in becoming more involved with local governance have the opportunity to apply to the Board of Variance. The City of Nanaimo is currently recruiting one member for a three-year term.

The Board of Variance is an independent body that can grant variances to relax zoning regulations, servicing requirements and tree protection requirements; extend non-conforming uses; and, reconstruct non-conforming building.

Interested residents can submit a completed application form to the Legislative Services Department by 4:00 pm on Friday, August 12.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

24 hour a day road closures are taking place on Rock City Road from Ocean Pearl Terrace to Landalt Road August 8 to 26.
Work will commence along Boxwood Road and Northfield Road. Please slow down and obey signage on site.
Metral Drive is still an active construction area. Traffic control will aim to keep traffic flowing; however, please display patience for the workers as they endeavor to do this work as quickly as they can.
Fourth Street between Bruce Avenue and Pine Street is open, however work is still taking place. Commuters can expect minor delays.
Utility upgrades are taking place on Holland Road between Jingle Pot Road and Ashlee Road. Access to buses and local traffic only. Other commuters should plan an alternate route.
Utility upgrades are taking place on Cottleview Drive and Hillside Avenue between Caldwell Street and Pacific Edge Way. Commuters can expect minor delays.
Mobility upgrades are taking place at the intersection of Bruce Avenue and Sixth Street. Commuters should expect minor delays.
Park Avenue between Fifth Street and Seventh Street will be closed in both directions for a sanitary sewer upgrade. The road closure will be in place for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Access is available for local traffic and emergency vehicles only. A detour will be in place using Bruce Avenue and the closure will remain in effect until the sewer upgrade project is completed in September.
