Dear --
People in our communities deserve to be safe. British Columbia has led the country in calling for federal reforms that put public safety first and weโre encouraged that the federal government has listened to what we've been asking for.
The federal governmentโs recent announcement of new measures to amend the Criminal Code and other federal statutes are a promising step forward to keep people safe and hold perpetrators accountable. Many of the actions reflect proposals our provincial government put forward to better protect people from repeat and violent offenders and strengthen public safety, including new reverse-onus bail in high-risk cases and a sharper focus on harms and intimate partner violence. We will monitor the implementation of these federal reforms closely to assess whether they are working as intended.
At the provincial level, it's already been a busy fall legislative session in Victoria. From tougher penalties for sharing intimate images without consent to new job protections for people facing a serious injury or illness -- continue scrolling through this latest update to get a snapshot of some of the changes and updates that people in North Vancouver have let me know matter to our community.
