COMING UP AT COUNCIL

WINDSPORTS BEACH AT SP'AKW'US FEATHER PARK TEMPORARILY CLOSED TO KITES

The District of Squamish has temporarily closed the watersports beach at Sp’akw’us Feather Park on the oceanfront to kites and kiteboarders. An investigation is underway to understand the details of what contributed to Monday’s fatal accident where a kiteboarder was blown onto the rocky headland.

While the investigation is underway, kites are being restricted out of caution to ensure public safety. Wingfoiling and windsurfing continue to be permitted.

“Public safety is paramount and so we must take this cautionary step while we work to understand the contributing factors to the accident,” says Bill Stoner, the District’s General Manager of Corporate Services. “We urge kiters to adhere to the closure. The results of the investigation will guide our next steps.”

Access to Pepahím̓ (Spit Island) for kiteboarding is continuing as normal through the seasonal shuttle service operated by the Squamish Windsports Society. Shuttles take place daily between noon and 7 p.m. with access to the shuttle launch a short walk from the Sp’akw’us Feather parking lot.

STAY SAFE IN THE HEAT

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Howe Sound during this first hot stretch of the summer.

Extreme heat affects everyone. The public is advised to take precautions and watch for signs of heat illness, such as swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions, drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty, and stay in a cool location if possible.

Residents are reminded that they may seek refuge in one of our public facilities, including Brennan Park Recreation Centre, The 55 Activity Centre, and Squamish Public Library during regular operating hours.

ROAD PAINTING EXTENDED

The annual road painting refresh program has been extended until July 15.

The purpose of this program is to enhance driving safety, and work will be occurring in all Squamish neighbourhoods.

The crew will be working at night to limit traffic impacts. Impacts will include noise, traffic delays, and paint odours where the crew is working.

Please exercise caution near the work zones and watch for wet paint.

LANDFILL CLOSURE NOTICE

Notice to residents that the landfill will be closed on July 19 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The landfill will re-open the same day from 4 - 5:45 p.m.

WESTERN TOADLET MIGRATION UPDATE

Western toadlets are ON THE MOVE into the upland forests above Garibaldi Springs. During this monumental migration they cover much of Covenant trail and will cross most of the trails highlighted on the map, especially The Covenant, Trestle, Cherub, Glenn’s Carwash and Lumber Rocks trails.

As they migrate into the forests, the toadlets are extremely sensitive to disturbance. This makes our responsible use of trails critical to their survival. They are so numerous, tiny and camouflaged, it is impossible to use these trails without crushing them.

Please support local western toad populations by making alternative trail choices for the next two weeks.
