This most recent convocation – Spring 2024 – was bittersweet as it was my final one as Dean of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems.

As you may be aware, starting October 1, 2024, I will be moving to the University of Alberta as the new Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences when my term as Dean with LFS comes to a close. It’s been a wonderful 10 years for me as Dean of this outstanding Faculty.

The LFS Hall of Fame recognizes alumni who have excelled in their fields and are contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future. Chosen by the LFS Young Alumni Council from a wide pool of nominations, alumni inductees exemplify the LFS spirit, achieving outstanding success locally, nationally, and internationally as graduates.

Our two inaugural inductees for 2024 are Harold Steves, BSc Agriculture (1963) and Amy Yiu, BSc Food, Nutrition and Health, Major in Dietetics (2005).

New research funding to support farmers in adapting to climate change 🌍

Dr. Hannah Wittman leads a groundbreaking project funded by 2023 International Joint Initiative for Research in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, focusing on climate adaptation and mitigation for vulnerable farmers in Canada, Germany, India, and Brazil. Organic farms next to conventionally farmed fields leads to increased pesticide use

Frederik Noack was interviewed by CBC’s Quirks & Quarks to discuss the findings from a joint study that was published in Science.

They wanted to understand how the proximity of organic farms to conventional fields affected overall pesticide use, and looked at one of the most important agricultural areas in the U.S. in Kern County, Calif.
