The RIfS Global Extremes Platform (GEP) project is inviting applications to participate in the Annual assessment of Weather and Climate Extremes (AWCE) working group. This body will gather international experts with relevant experience in the field to prepare reports to be delivered in May of each year, with a retrospective analysis of events of the past year.

We welcome applicants with expertise in annual weather and climate extremes or related fields such as statistics, social sciences, capacity building, or climate impact research. Early career researchers, women, gender-diverse individuals, and those from emerging economies are especially encouraged to apply.

Deadline: August 5, 2025

This is a limited call to fill one opening, with term to commence at the start of 2026. We are looking to reinforce the expertise of the RIfS Scientific Steering Group (SSG) in particular areas. Thus, we encourage applicants with expertise in modelling for seasonal-to-decadal prediction, oceans and coastal impacts, experts on climate information working in the humanitarian sector, and social-sciences relevant to RIfS' work.

This call invites the community to nominate candidates (including self-nomination) especially who are based in countries not currently represented by the SSG and particularly encourage applications from "Least Developed Countries", "Landlocked Developing Countries", and "Small Island Developing States".

Deadline: September 15, 2025

This is an open call to fill vacant position(s) within the GEP Working Group on Event Attribution. This open call is targeted at the Global South and/or other underrepresented regions.

We welcome applications from individuals who can provide expertise in event attribution, or can provide a bridge to relevant or related disciplines including, but not limited to, statistical methods, social sciences, capacity building, or climate impacts research. Regional representation will be a priority, with the expectation that selected members will act as conduits for event attribution efforts in their region. Early career researchers (ECRs), women, gender-diverse individuals, and representatives from emerging economies are particularly encouraged to apply.

Updates

We are glad to share that the RIfS Robust Information Working Group (RIWG) has been established after an enriching journey that began with the expert meeting on Robustness of Climate Change Information for Decisions in 2024, and the first steps taken by the Interim Working Group.

The aim of the RIWG and its associated task teams is to establish what it means for a scientific product to be “robust”, i.e., context specific regional climate information that is fit for informing decision-making; and what processes could look like to generate and apply robust information to produce “robust” decisions.

If you have any questions, please direct them to any member of the working group or to the RIfS IPO by writing to: admin@wcrp-rifs.org.

We are pleased to announce that the Joint Task Team between RIfS and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) on Responsible Data Use has been launched. We would like to thank everyone who responded to the call for participation and invite you to follow the task team's activities closely.

The CMIP is currently the basis of a large number of efforts to plan for future climate on scales that are not always well-resolved in GCMs, often via derived products that seek to add value regarding additional processes. Given the well-established role of CMIP data, and derived products, to inform decisions at the regional scale, this task team seeks to reduce data misuse by developing recommendations for better means of documenting the limitations of CMIP model outputs for various key applications.

If you have any questions, please direct them to any member of the task team or to the RIfS IPO by writing to: admin@wcrp-rifs.org.

It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome the members of the new task team focused on Africa. We would like to extend our special gratitude to those who responded to the call and look forward to their participation in the efforts of this team to define and address regional-specific challenges on climate information for society in Africa.

RIfS has partnered with CLARE for an initial two year period to support a Science Officer based in Africa to help coordinate across diverse, but related, efforts around the continent. There will also be two postdocs based at African institutions to work on pilot projects identified by the Task Team. The Task Team provides guidance for these personnel.

CLARE is a flagship research programme on climate adaptation and resilience, funded mostly (about 90%) by UK Aid through the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and co-funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. CLARE is bridging critical gaps between science and action by championing Southern leadership to enable socially inclusive and sustainable action to build resilience to climate change and natural hazards.

If you have any questions, please direct them to any member of the task team or to the RIfS IPO by writing to: admin@wcrp-rifs.org.

The RIfS International Project Office (IPO) team is complete!

We welcome Timothy Lam (Science Officer, from Hong Kong) and Eleonora Gonzalez Porcel (Science and Comms Officer, from Argentina). They are the new members of the international team that coordinates and supports RIfS initiatives.

Eleonora Gonzalez Porcel will bring her background in transdisciplinary research and social science methods to supporting RIfS' activities, and will also direct communications with the broader community about RIfS' work.

Timothy Lam will bring his expertise in regional and global climate simulations, impact studies, and work with actors across diverse regions to support RIfS' activities on robust climate information, responsible data use, and other projects.

The RIfS IPO is hosted by Ouranos Inc. in Montreal, Canada.

Save the date! Asia Climate Risk and Impact Strategic Workshop

CORDEX is organizing a workshop as part of the 5th International Vietnam Conference on Earth and Environmental Sciences (iVCEES-2025). The iVCEES-2025 will be held from November 24 to November 28, 2025 at the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), Quy Nhon, Vietnam.

WCRP Highlights

The CMIP Community Workshop 2026 will gather a diverse group of Earth system scientists, partners, and stakeholders to discuss advances in Earth system and coupled modelling. The event will review findings from CMIP6, present early results from CMIP7, explore new experimental designs and MIPs, and focus on enhancing observation-modelling integration. Attendees can expect opportunities for networking, collaboration, and knowledge exchange, as well as an Early-Career Scientist hackathon led by Fresh Eyes on CMIP.

We specially invite you to submit abstracts to the following sessions:

Abstract submission deadline: August 13, 2025

Submit an abstract

For the 30th anniversary since the beginning of CliC, this Open Science Conference will contribute to the UN Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025-2034) and prepare the community for the 5th International Polar Year (2032-2033) with a diverse and cross-discipline town hall meeting. This town hall will provide space for the international and interdisciplinary cryospheric community to connect, discuss needs, find synergies, and plan meaningful action.

Abstract submission and travel grant application deadline: August 31, 2025.

The 3rd International Conference on Subseasonal to Seasonal to Decadal Prediction (S2S2D) will take place on 7-11 September 2026 in Reading, UK. This event will provide a forum for the current state of Earth system prediction science to be shared and discussed. It will consist of two parallel sub-conferences, respectively focusing on the subseasonal-to-seasonal and seasonal-to-decadal prediction horizons, together with plenary sessions addressing cross-cutting themes.
