ALERT: Increase in Invasive Group A Streptococcus (iGAS) cases

In May, the Ministry of Health reported an increase of IGAS cases above normal seasonal expectations. This trend remains evident across the province and within our local region.

iGAS rates across the province have increased this season to 8.3 per 100,000, up from the previous five-year average of 4.9. The current 2023 rate of iGAS within HPEPH is at10.67. HPEPH has had 10 reported iGAS cases between June 1 and July 18, 2023, a significant increase from the 2 total cases reported June - July 2022.

The highest rates of iGAS province wide are being seen within those under four years of age and 65 years of age and older with an increase proportion of cases having a fatal outcome compared to previous years.

Persons at increased risk for development of iGAS include those who:

  • are infants and under four years of age,
  • are pregnant or postpartum,
  • are of older age and with immunocompromising conditions,
  • have had recent chickenpox infection,
  • are experiencing homelessness,
  • inject drugs.

In an effort to reduce morbidity and mortality, we are requesting that our health care partners continue to:

  • Provide prompt assessment and treatment for patients with symptoms of non-invasive GAS such as pharyngitis and skin and soft tissue infections.
  • Be on alert for complications of GAS and consider iGAS as possible cause in patients with severe illness.
  • Provide early testing and intervention if iGAS is suspected.
  • Continue to encourage your patients to remain up-to-date on their immunizations, particularly varicella vaccine.
  • Report all iGAS cases and clusters to Hastings Prince Edward Public Health.

2023/2024 seasonal respiratory pathogens planning

On July 17, the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) released a memorandum outlining respiratory season predictions and recommending our health care colleagues begin planning for the expected increased demand on the health care system. The CMOH is anticipating another atypical respiratory season as compared with pre-pandemic years with earlier circulation of respiratory pathogens such as Influenza and RSV, and an increased impact on pediatric populations.

To support health system readiness, the Ministry of Health has developed the Seasonal Respiratory Pathogens Readiness and Response Planning Guide. Included in this guide are expectations for health system partners, respiratory pathogens risk outlook and planning scenarios to inform readiness efforts.

We are encouraging our health care colleagues to review this planning guide and begin to prepare for respiratory season.
