Lets Talk: Steep Slopes – Public Hearing

There is a Public Hearing scheduled for October 6, 2026 for 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at Municipal Hall, so that affected persons can weigh in on Amendment Bylaw (Steep Slopes Development Permit Area) No. 3244, 2026. The Bylaw has already received First and Second Reading by Council.

Affected lands include land with a slope equal to or greater than 30%, within Squamish, B.C., as shown on Schedule E, within Amendment Bylaw (Steep Slopes Development Permit Area) No. 3244, 2026.

Council will not consider submissions received after the close of the Public Hearing. All submissions will form part of the public record.

Let's Talk: Labour Force Development Plan

The District of Squamish is creating a Labour Force Development Plan to help our community prepare for future jobs and workforce needs.

The plan will help guide actions over the next decade to support a strong local economy and create opportunities for people who live and work in Squamish.

This project is led by the District of Squamish, with support from Qatalyst Research Group and Synergy Foundation. Work on the plan began April 2026 and will continue to March 2027.

The District of Squamish's social procurement practice seeks to leverage procurement activities to achieve positive social outcomes such as environmental, social, and economic benefits, including:

  • Transitioning to a circular economy (aligned with the District’s 2023 Circular Economy Roadmap)
  • Advancing economic reconciliation within the Memorandum of Understanding between Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw and the District of Squamish
  • Fostering inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility (IDEA) in the community

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) is hosting a Truth and Reconciliation Commemoration on Wednesday, September 30.

Everyone is invited to gather as a community at 12:30 p.m. at the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Winnipeg Street and walk along Cleveland Avenue towards O'Siyam Pavilion to honour, remember, and pay respects to the survivors of Residential Schools and those who never made it home. The event also celebrates the resilience of Indigenous Peoples and the resurgence and reclamation of their ancestral teachings.

Join in creating awareness of 'Every Child Matters' by wearing an orange shirt.

Downtown Community Safety Update 

Clean up and tree clearing work at the downtown encampment located at Main Street and Third Avenue is underway. The site has been fully vacated by the occupants, outreach staff from Squamish Helping Hands Society and BC Housing continue to support people sheltering outdoors in the Downtown core area.

The cleanup of garbage and left materials from the site is now complete; waste removal and cleanup of the surrounding areas, including the area around Vancouver Street and Loggers Lane intersection, are ongoing.

RCMP and Bylaw officers will continue to maintain an enhanced presence in the downtown area while this critical community safety enhancement work is underway.

Rail Safety Week is dedicated to enhancing public awareness of the importance of community rail safety. When approaching a railway crossing, always remember to:

  • Cross only at designated railway locations
  • Obey railway signage
  • Look both ways and listen before crossing

Notice of Closure: Paradise Valley Bailey Bridge Repairs

Repair work is ongoing for the Paradise Valley Bridge project. Please allow for extra time and expect minor delays throughout construction, as well as increased noise levels during the work.

Expect the following scheduled closure:

  • Tuesday, September 29, from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.

Infrastructure Upgrades

  • Depot Road Active Transportation Upgrades and Annual Watermain Upgrades continue in Brackendale.
     
  • Work on the Paradise Valley Bailey Bridge repairs is now underway. Overnight closures expected during the work.

 

  • Wastewater System Upgrades continue in Dentville, on the Madill Forcemain. Construction work is paused.
  • Phased construction work on Squamish River Dike at Harris and Dryden Pump Stations and Central Lift Station continues through November.
