Hey, UBCO Community!

As the cold weather and lack of sunshine make it harder to feel motivated to stay active, it's easy to underestimate the importance of social connection and physical activity on our well-being. These two elements are key to thriving on campus during these winter months. Build social connections with peers, co-workers and friends by incorporating movement into your day. Physical activity doesn’t have to be strenuous; a walk with peers, quick stretch break, or desk exercises can be just as impactful.

February is Move UBC month! This month-long initiative encourages the UBC community to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary time. Whether you are a UBC student, faculty, or staff, work to empower others to make a change to reduce inactivity. This month, take a step toward a healthier and happier you by prioritizing connection and movement. Check out the events below to get you started!

Free Fitness Week

Faculty & Staff Movement Break Challenge

The Move UBC Movement Break Challenge is an engaging and inclusive way to break up stationary time for Faculty and Staff! Small changes can have a big impact when it comes to reducing sedentary (or stationary) behaviour and increasing physical activity. This challenge invites you to integrate more movement into your day, any way you can, to increase your faculty/department/unit’s total movement breaks and impact! The best part? There are some great prizes and its free to participate! Let’s get our campus community moving more.

Activewear Wednesday

Every Wednesday, during the month of February, wear activewear to receive free drop-in to the Hangar Fitness Centre, open-gym time or Group Fitness Classes!

Move UBC Kick-Off: Kpop Dance Class  

Kick off Move UBC month with a KPop Dance class! Brought to you by the KPop Dance Club, the executive team will bring together a variety of dance styles to complement pop music. This class is sure to bring out all the feels! Please bring comfortable clothing to dance in and clean indoor shoes. 

All levels welcome and no experience necessary! Feel free to bring friends.

Glow Run/Walk

Join UBCO Recreation for a Glow Roll, Run or Walk and help us celebrate the kick-off of Move UBC Month with a 3 km roll/run/walk on campus. Glow sticks will be provided! 

Date: Thursday, February 6th 

Time: 6pm

Lunch and Learn – Anti-oppressive approaches and responding to racism through play (Virtual)

Facilitator: Ingrid Broussillon founder of Griottes Polyglottes 

Join us for a mindful meditation, followed by a workshop on Anti-Oppressive Approaches. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you felt there was an injustice but you didn’t know what to say, how to react, you froze??  

Using improvisation and theatre of the oppressed format, participants will work together, train themselves to be allies, and not be a bystander. 

We will share tools and strategies to navigate difficult situations. Let’s speak up and promote inclusion… together!

Wheelchair Sports Try it Day 

Join UBCO Recreation and BC Wheelchair Sports Association for a fun and inclusive introductory session where new participants can try wheelchair sports with supportive British Columbia Wheelchair Sports Association peers and coaches. Wheelchairs will be supplied. 

No experience or equipment necessary.

Research Roundtable

Did you know moving with others promotes connection, confidence and motivation to be physically active? Join us in learning the latest emerging research in relation to physical activity and social connection. The second portion of the event will be a facilitated discussion on how the research can be translated to our campus settings with the aim to improve wellbeing through physical activity at UBC. Light refreshments will be provided.

Glow Yoga

Join UBCO Recreation for an energizing yoga flow in the dark. Glow sticks will be provided. Please bring your own mat and water bottle. Doors open at 6:30 pm and yoga starts at 7 pm. Be sure to arrive with enough time to get your glow on and set up your mat.

Winter 2025, Season 2: League Lottery

Lottery Registration for Winter 2025, season 2 intramurals: February 3 – 6. These leagues will begin after Reading Break and run until the end of term.

Season 1 Play-Offs

Playoffs for the current intramural leagues are fast-approaching. Playoff schedules will be emailed out to eligible teams following their last league game. Playoffs run February 9-13.
