In fact, bears can smell attractants like food and improperly stored garbage from between 1 and 32 kilometres away! And once a bear has become accustomed to human food, it poses a risk to both their own and the public’s safety. Help keep bears wild in Squamish with these few simple tips. | | At home: - Keep garbage secure. Store it in a secure location, in your bear-proof bin, and only put it out on the proper garbage collection day no earlier than 5:30 a.m.
- Use bird baths and native species to attract birds, and avoid having birdfeeders.
- Feed your pets indoors and make sure you keep their food and bowls inside, as well.
- Manage your fruit trees and berry bushes so fruit is picked as it ripens.
- Keep barbecues clean and odour free. Throw a cover on that grill when you’re done to reduce odours, as well.
- Keep your car clean of food and garbage, and locked!
At the campsite: - Don’t leave attractants lying around your campsite like garbage, cans or open food containers.
- Store all your food, toiletries and garbage securely in bear-proof bins or in locked hard-sided vehicles.
- Cook, eat and wash your dishes well away from where you’ll be sleeping. Never cook in tents.
- Avoid sleeping in the same clothing you wore while cooking.

During Stage 1 Water Restrictions, you can only use sprinklers two days per week from 4 to 10 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Even addresses can water Wednesday and Saturday, while odd addresses can water on Thursday and Sunday. During these summer months when water usage peaks, there are plenty of things you can do to help conserve water even more! Here are a few water-saving changes you can make and tips you can follow: - Water early. Water in the morning when it's cooler to reduce water lost to evaporation.
- Water less. Your lawn only needs about one hour of sprinkling per week to stay healthy.
| | - Water deeply. Apply water slowly and deeply (but infrequently) so it reaches the root system.
- Add a sensor. Add rain sensors to automatic irrigation to ensure you’re not overwatering.
- Or let it go dormant. It's natural for lawns to turn brown in summer. Letting turf rest saves significant amounts of water. Your lawn will green-up again in the fall.
- Save water from rinsing. Wash your summer fruit over a big bowl or container and save that water for your outdoor plants later.
- Re-wild your lawn. Consider reducing your turf area and plant native species. They’re better suited to our climate and can often thrive on just rainfall.

Here are some tips to help you safely share the road with local wildlife, both big and small! - Be prepared. Whether it’s a daily commute or road trip, be aware of the potential risk of a wildlife collision. We may see the road as a dangerous place for animals; they don’t always have the same perception.
- Slow down. Speed is one of the most common factors in wildlife collisions. Speed makes it harder to avoid things in the road, extends the distance required to stop, and increases the force of an impact.
| | - Pay attention. Be more cautious around dusk and dawn when animals are more active. Watch for things like wildlife warning road signs. Look ahead for movement or the reflection of eyes. If you do see an animal on the side of the road, ease up on the accelerator and cover your brake pedal.
- Don’t stop for pictures. Pulling over for a roadside pic can pose a serious hazard for other drivers and put animals at risk. As well, never get out of your vehicle to get a closer look or better shot.
