Help us make glass recycling easier in Squamish!

The District is looking to launch a pilot program where glass collection stations are set-up throughout the neighbourhoods of Squamish.

The intent is that there will be two totes at multiple locations throughout town, where residents can drop-off glass only, with the purpose of making it more convenient for residents to recycle glass, as well as reduce the amount of glass in our curbside recycling.

Follow the link below and mark on the map where you think would be an effective location for a neighbourhood glass station(s).

CAMPFIRE BAN LIFTED

District of Squamish Fire Rescue (SFR) will rescind the campfire ban Friday, May 31 at 4 p.m., due to the continued wet conditions in the forecast and with the high compliance rate that has significantly reduced the number of abandoned or unattended campfire complaints within the District of Squamish.

A campfire ban will be considered once again when conditions require.

Residential Campfire Permits are required, and can only be used on private residential properties with the written permission of the property owner or in designated commercial campgrounds within the District of Squamish boundaries.

Fires are never permitted in public areas such as beaches, parks or riverbanks and would still be subject to bylaw enforcement.

JUNE 1 IS WILD SALMON DAY

June 1 is “Wild Salmon Day”! Wild salmon have an important cultural and environmental role in BC, including Squamish. This proclamation raises awareness for salmon and the challenges they face for survival. On this special day, we invite you to use your voice to raise awareness for Pacific salmon and the countless ecosystems they support.

Squamish is home to several salmon bearing rivers, streams, wetlands and interconnecting ditches that host a multitude of salmon species. These are critical habitat for spawning salmon and a community treasure.

Wild Salmon Day began in 2019 in British Columbia, and is supported by many cities in the province, as well as Yukon Territory! On May 21, Council approved that June 1 be proclaimed Wild Salmon Day in Squamish. We are pleased to join the BC provincial government in honouring this day.

The salmon in the photos can be found Downtown (Cleveland and Pemberton intersection), Brackendale Dike and near the highway overpass at Garibaldi Village. These pieces are some of the first to be restored as part of the District of Squamish Public Art Conservation Program in partnership with Squamish Arts.
