Sincerely, Mayor Steve Pellegrini | King Township prohibits the use of train whistles at three grade train crossings along the Barrie GO Line King neighbourhoods are getting quieter. King Township, in coordination with York Region and Metrolinx, has eliminated train whistles at three (3) grade train crossings along the Barrie GO Line at Station Road, 15th Sideroad, and Dufferin Street. Transport Canada has developed a rigorous process in urbanized areas to provide alternatives to train whistling at a public grade crossing and offer local residents relief from the noise. The use of new technologies and strategies can replace the need for whistles at certain crossings, when proven effective in maintaining safety. Crews are ready to maintain over 330 km of roads and 100 km of sidewalks across King, with an enhanced service level and approach to winter road treatments. In urban subdivisions, crews will now use Thawrox—treated salt specifically designed for improved snow and ice control—rather than the traditional sand/salt mix. On rural roads, the salt concentration will be reduced to lessen environmental impact while maintaining safe driving conditions. Thawrox, which includes natural, eco-friendly additives, significantly reduces chlorides entering the environment and uses a non-staining colorant that poses no risk to roads, waterways or vegetation. A reminder that snowplowing occurs in priority sequence to ensure that fire and emergency services can drive on the roads and respond to calls. Road clearing is typically completed within a 12-hour period after the snowfall is complete but can take longer during a Significant Weather Event. Learn more at king.ca/snowremoval.
