Brennan Park Recreation Centre: Green and Accessibility Retrofit Project Complete

Patrick Weiler, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver – Sunshine Coast – Sea-to-Sky Country, Squamish Nation Elder Linda Williams and District of Squamish Mayor Armand Hurford gathered last week to mark the completion of the Brennan Park Recreation Centre Green and Accessibility Retrofit Project.

The $21-million project was funded in part by over $11.7 million from the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program (Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada) and $1.2 million from the Build Communities Strong Fund Community stream. More than 75 per cent of the upgrades took place behind the scenes, hidden in walls, ceilings and mechanical rooms.

Project Update: Supportive Housing at 39900 Government Road

On July 21 at the Regular Council Meeting, Council received a Letter of Commitment from BC Housing and endorsed a lease with the Provincial Rental Housing Corporation for the supportive housing project at 39900 Government Road. The letter outlines BC Housing’s commitments related to site operations, community inclusion, neighbourhood responsiveness, and ongoing collaboration.

2027 Permissive Tax Exemption Applications

The District of Squamish is now accepting applications for Permissive Tax Exemptions. 

Permissive Tax Exemptions are a method that the District of Squamish, supported by Council, may support voluntary non-profit organizations by exempting land or improvements or both, from taxation under Section 224 of the Community Charter.

If your organization can demonstrate eligibility, you are welcome to apply for an exemption. The deadline to apply is July 31, 2026, for exemptions beginning for the 2027 taxation year.

Six Big Moves: Community Climate Action Plan

A healthy environment is vital to our culture, well-being, and local economy. The District's Community Climate Action Plan includes Six Big Moves to build a more resilient future for Squamish:

  • Close the loop on waste: Our community plans to divert all organics from the landfill and recover value from waste.
  • Shift beyond the car: Active transportation (walking and rolling) and transit are preferred modes of travel within Squamish.
  • Decarbonize transportation: Electric (or low-carbon) cars, buses, fleets, and larger vehicles are the preferred option.
  • Decarbonize existing buildings: Energy retrofits occur in all types of buildings in Squamish.
  • Construct better buildings: New buildings are efficient, use low-carbon energy sources, and it takes fewer emissions to produce them.
  • Organizational leadership: Squamish continues to learn, improve and prepare for a low-carbon future.

Traffic Impact Notice: Cleveland Avenue

The Big Weekend is upon us July 24-26.

Please expect the following closure on Saturday, July 25:

Cleveland Avenue (Winnipeg to Main)
→ 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Accessible parking will be available at two locations (see map)
→ Stan Clarke Park
→ Winnipeg Street

Stage 1 Water Restrictions in Effect

Water conservation helps to avoid or delay costly water system upgrades.

Thank you for doing your part!

Stage 1 limits sprinkler use for lawns, trees, flowers, and shrubs to two days per week:

Even addresses → Wednesday & Saturday
Odd addresses → Thursday & Sunday

Lawn watering with a sprinkler is allowed from 4 to 10 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. on those days. Hand watering with a container or device with an automatic shut-off is allowed on any day, and at any time.

Infrastructure Upgrades

  • Annual Line Painting continues.
  • Wastewater System Upgrades continue in Dentville.
  • Annual Watermain Upgrades continue in Brackendale.
  • Phased construction on Squamish River Dike at Harris and Dryden Pump Stations and Central Lift Station through to November.

 

  • Depot Road Active Transportation Upgrades continue. The project will provide safe, comfortable and accessible pedestrian and cyclist access, and improve lighting and accessibility for all users. Residents should expect increased noise level and single-lane alternating traffic during construction hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday).

Wildlife Wednesday – Weekly Recap

Did you know, coyotes are opportunistic feeders and may see some pets as prey, especially if they are free roaming. This is why pet owners should keep cats indoors or keep a watchful eye when letting them out in the yard.

Here are some wildlife safety tips to help reduce unwanted human-wildlife interactions:

  • Keep your dogs on a leash. It gives you more control of your canine companion in the presence of wildlife and can help de-escalate the situation quickly.

  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid areas with ongoing wildlife activity.

  • Never run away. It might invite the animal to chase you. Instead, keep your pet close to you (or pick it up) and back away slowly.

  • Remove wildlife attractants (e.g. compost and garbage) and trim overgrown vegetation on your property to improve visibility.
