LAUNCH OF THE LAND SQUAD PROJECT

The MRC of Memphrémagog, the five lakeside municipalities and Blue Massawippi are joining forces this summer to take another step in their fight against the zebra mussel.

It is through the new environmental component of the Fonds régions et ruralité that the MRC de Memphrémagog is injecting $10,000 into the Land and Water Squad (ÉTÉ) project of Blue Massawippi. The five municipalities are each adding $1,000.

The urgency to intervene became apparent last year when, under the circumstances of the pandemic, hundreds of new boaters swarmed to the lake, unaware of the dangers of contamination that their boats represented. "We quickly realized that despite our efforts at the official boat launches, the situation was out of control, and a solution had to be found and financed," explains Patrick Fréchette, President of Blue Massawippi.

The Fonds régions et ruralité arrived in time. The ÉTÉ project focuses exclusively on intercepting and educating boaters who go into the lake without a washing certificate, in parks, unsupervised public areas, the beaches, the Tomifobia River or the Massawippi River. To this end, two full-time patrollers will be working tirelessly to get the message out to the public and direct summer visitors to the washing stations. No less than 25 sites have been targeted, 8 of which are considered very problematic.

Starting June 19th, patrollers will be active and present every day in the heart of each municipality, a first for Blue Massawippi. They will be assisted on the lake by the Blue Patrol. At the end of the project, the data, conclusions, and recommendations will be transmitted to the 6 municipal partners for discussion and decisions.

The ÉTÉ project also relies on involvement and accountability of every citizen. Shoreline residents must intervene and prevent their visitors or guests from putting their small boats into the lake without a washing certificate.

Blue Massawippi reminds us that a contamination of the zebra mussel would be catastrophic for Lake Massawippi, which is much more vulnerable than all the contaminated lakes and rivers in the region: "The treat is so close, and it is a miracle that the lake is free of zebra mussels. As such, only collaborative action, solidarity, and mobilization will allow us to win, year after year, this fight which will never end” concludes General Manager Michèle Gérin "this project is the most concrete example of this.”

ABOUT THE "ÉTÉ" PROJECT

"During the call for projects at the beginning of 2021 within the framework of the FRR, the elected officials of the MRC de Memphrémagog agreed to create a new "environmental component".

"ÉTÉ project was in line with the objectives of the fund and of this new component, since it allows the population to become aware of a major issue: the protection of our lakes. The project will also contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the MRC's Environmental Action Plan, and the MRC is very pleased to see the involvement of partners to help it achieve this. "

Jacques Demers, Reeve of the MRC de Memphrémagog and Mayor of Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley.

Michael Page, Mayor of North Hatley

"We are pleased to collaborate with Blue Massawippi on this project. The dispersion of invasive species causes several problems, particularly in relation to our drinking water intake which is located in Lake Massawippi.

It is our duty to ensure that the established standards and directives are respected in order to prevent this situation. "

ACTIVITIES FEATURED IN THE LAST 15 DAYS

HEALTH CHECK Outing 1

Our health check tool developed last year provides for 3 outings to 4 sites around the lake.
