This is the first step toward developing a more comprehensive by-law, which will be prepared as part of the Town’s Urban Plan review. Here are a few simple tips to put into practice: 1. Fallen leaf management: avoid depositing leaves and vegetation near the lake or ditches, as they unnecessarily enrich the water and accelerate its aging. - Instead, use the municipal fallen leaf collection service (see the collection schedule).
- Even better: shred them with a mower or blower-shredder, then leave them on the lawn. They will naturally enrich your soil.
Tip: do this in several small steps when the leaves are dry, rather than waiting for them to accumulate in large quantities. 2. The riparian buffer: the less you do, the better! - Plant maintenance is prohibited by municipal bylaw.
- Leave the riparian strip as is: dead branches and leaves protect perennials, nourish the soil, and limit weed regrowth.
- Take the opportunity to plant new plants: fall is an ideal season, as young plants avoid the stress of heat and drought.
3. Pools and spas: When you empty your pool or spa, pour the water onto a vegetated area of your property after letting it sit for at least a week without adding any products. Make sure it does not flow into the lake or waterways. 4. Docks and boats: When removing your watercraft, inspect them carefully. You may find zebra mussels or other invasive species. (See our next article for more information on this topic.) | Zebra Mussels: Let’s Stay Alert! Did you know that you can help monitor zebra mussels in Brome Lake? This invasive alien species has not yet colonized our waterway, and we are making significant efforts to prevent its introduction. Here are a few tips: When you take your dock and boats out of the water in the fall, take the time to inspect them. Zebra mussels attach themselves firmly to submerged surfaces. They often prefer areas sheltered from sunlight and currents. | | Check for zebra mussels on dock legs, under ladder steps, on concrete blocks, ropes, chains, buoys, and boat hulls and propellers. Be vigilant! Zebra mussels can be tiny. Want to learn how to identify them? Check out this brochure. To learn more about the species, see this brochure. If you think you have seen mussels attached to your structure, please send photos to our environmental advisor as soon as possible at anais.renaud@lacbrome.ca. We would like to remind you that cleaning your boat is the best way to prevent zebra mussels from being introduced into Lake Brome.
