September 2021 Return to Campus News

As you may already be aware from reports in the media, a full return to the UBC Vancouver campus will begin on September 7, 2021, as part of the BC Restart plan. This week the BC provincial government announced that a BC Vaccine Card will be introduced, taking effect on September 13, 2021. Members of the UBC Community will be required to show proof of having received the COVID-19 vaccination in order to access a number of activities, including indoor ticketed sporting events, indoor and patio dining in restaurants, fitness centres, and indoor organized events. You may read the full announcement here.

We highly encourage all members of the UBC community to receive their vaccinations. Visit the British Columbia government website here to register for your vaccine.

The health of our community is of primary concern. As of Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021, there is a renewed mask mandate. Effective immediately, masks must be worn in all indoor public spaces throughout B.C. to help slow the transmission of COVID-19 as the province prepares for the fall and respiratory illness season. Indoor settings of post-secondary institutions include classrooms, labs, lobbies, hallways, stairwells, and elevators. We will continue to provide ongoing updates or changes to our alumni, students, faculty, and staff as they become available to us.

A Historian’s View of the Fractured World of Kinesiology

Professor Patricia Vertinsky is a historian of physical culture and is a Distinguished University Scholar. In "Searching for Balance: A Historian’s View of the Fractured World of Kinesiology" Vertinsky has written a self-reflective article on the development of the discipline of physical education and kinesiology.

Vertinsky writes, "In this essay....I have outlined how my disciplinary training as a physical educator and educational historian provided the resources to propel my continuing inquiry into the inter- and cross-disciplinary (and intrinsically entangled) nature of kinesiology. Gender, nationality, training, location, and timing all had their influences on my education and job opportunities and upon building toward a career in a research university where physical education and kinesiology, by design and accident, increasingly separated from one another."

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Thursday, September 30, 2021

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is designated as an opportunity to ‘recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools.’ A national holiday was established “to honour survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.”

UBC is committed to advancing Indigenous human rights through truth and reconciliation. The 2020 Indigenous Strategic Plan represents a university-wide response to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls’ Calls for Justice. It also represents the UBC Vancouver campus’ response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
