Provincial Health Order Updates

On Thursday, March 11, Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced outdoor get-togethers of up to 10 people are allowed. You can now choose a maximum of 10 people to enjoy physically distanced outdoor activities with — and stick with them. Always plan extra carefully if you have a high-risk person in your household.

The updated PHO order and guidance mean:

  • YES to small gatherings outdoors in places like backyards, parks, and beaches
  • YES to outdoor playdates for kids in the same cohort
  • NO to gatherings indoors with anyone outside your household
  • NO to gathering with several groups of new friends – stick to one group
  • NO to going inside a residence

Continue to use your layers of protection: keep a safe distance, wear a mask if you can't stay 2m apart, wash your hands, and stay home and get tested if you're sick.

Spring Break Programs

The Activity Guide is constantly being updated with new programs so be sure to check it often. For example, there is a new Advanced Stickhandling Class for 12-17 year olds. Also, as the Provincial Health Orders are updated, changes to programming may occur.

Sand has been added to the sand volleyball courts at Bowen Park! Ask your friends (your safe 10) to meet you there over spring break! Access the volleyball courts from the lower parking lot, entrance off Wall Street.

Additional Skating Sessions

It's Spring Break and we are happy to let you know that extra skating sessions have been scheduled. Check out our schedule on our website and book up to 72 hours in advance by calling 250-756-5200 or online.

St. Patrick's Day - Let's Be Green

This week we celebrate St. Patrick's Day and that means just about everything green is worn, eaten and drank! Instead of just wearing green, let's all aim to be green by making some simple lifestyle changes.

Adapting to the Doughnut Model

The anticipated conversation on Doughnut Economics and REIMAGINE Nanaimo occurred at the March 8, 2021 Governance and Priorities Committee meeting. Read the summary, view the report or watch the livestream presentation and familiarize yourself with Phase II.

Nanaimo Businesses! Are You Ready?

As of July 1, 2021, all businesses that provide checkout bags to customers will be regulated by a new bylaw.

The City of Nanaimo’s Checkout Bag Regulation Bylaw 2020 No.7283 is a step forward in reducing unnecessary plastic waste. For businesses, that means a bit of planning ahead to prepare to operate without single-use plastic bags at the checkout stand. And not all reusable and paper bags are the same. Paper bags will need to contain at least 40% post-consumer recycled paper, and reusable bags will need to be washable and capable of 100 uses or more. Watch for a business letter and brochure coming to your mailbox soon that will outline the coming changes.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Stay informed on the City's Current Construction Projects page. Staff provide up-to-date information on City construction projects.

  • Please remember access is limited on Metral Drive from Turner to Mostar to residents and business traffic only, please respect that the road is closed to through traffic. As an active construction site with large machinery working and deep utility trenches, road closures may occur and delays are to be expected. Please drive slowly and respect signage.
  • To accommodate development and maintain site safety, Rock City Road will be closed from Ocean Pearl Terrace to Barrington Road to through traffic 24 hours for 5 weeks. Local traffic should expect delays and plan their trips accordingly.
  • Expect single lane traffic on Comox Road as work continues on the Millstone Trunk Sanitary Sewer Upgrades project.
  • The Complete Street makeover is expected to begin later in the week along Front Street.
  • Disruptions will occur on Waddington Road at St. George Crescent for crosswalk improvements including concrete curbing.
