May is Museum Month

Celebrate Museum Month!

This year's theme is Museums for Education and Research.

All May we will be celebrating our community museum, Craigleith Heritage Depot, with fun interactive activities both online and in-person. Take a selfie at Craigleith Heritage Depot and post it on social. Be sure to tag us and include the #ONMuseumMonth! Or, drop by L.E. Shore Library to complete the Artifact Detective online scavenger hunt. Play Guess The Artifact as we slowly reveal the full image—can you make a guess before the full artifact is revealed? Celebrate Museum Month this May and let us know what you love about your Craigleith Heritage Depot community museum and archives.

Art by George Rutherford

That Which Inspires Us opens in The Gallery on May 4

Saturday, May 4, 2-4pm (The Gallery at L.E. Shore)

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Join us for our May art exhibit opening!

For this show, four artists (P. Annie Churchill, George Rutherford, Heather Bennett and Maureen White) have joined together to explore the elements, subjects and scenes that inspire them. The exhibit beautifully demonstrates how inspiration can emerge from anywhere – a body of water, a piece of cloth or a shade of color.

The artists will be in attendance at the opening, and this will be a chance to chat with the creator behind the work – all while enjoying complimentary refreshments and wine. Following the opening, the show will be in The Gallery until May 29.

We all love the lilacs along the Georgian Trial in the spring.

Come see our latest exhibit at the Museum, on the Craigleith lilacs. From the legends of how they arrived, to their sweet scent and bright colours each year after. Lions Club vest with pins and badges

The Museum receives donation from local Lions Club member

Look at all of those pins! A donation came to the Museum from a local family, whose relative was a long-serving member of the Thornbury Beaver Valley Lions Club along with serving on other Town departments and community committees over the years. We thank them for their service, and for their family's donation of such meaningful items.

If you have any items or documents you would like to donate to the Museum & Archives, please contact staff at museum@thebluemountains.ca or 519-599-3681 ext 6. Our collection of community history is only as strong as what our community chooses to give us to hold in public trust for future generations.

Recycle your eclipse glasses

In April we handed out 200 solar eclipse glasses, with half of them donated by the E.C. Carr Observatory!

You can recycle your eclipse glasses by dropping them off at the L.E. Shore Library or Craigleith Heritage Depot. We'll then send them to Astronomers without Borders. This organization collects safety glasses and gives them to people in areas where they might not be easy to find. It's a great way to share the joy of experiencing a solar eclipse safely with others around the world!

The Blue Mountains Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 20, Victoria Day.
