Announcements:
COVID-19 — Update to 2021/22 Winter Session, Term 2
As we enter 2022, we know the Omicron variant is a concern for many in our community. The UBC Broadcast, dated December 22, indicated that the university would delay the majority of in-person teaching and learning until January 24, with in-person learning continuing for some programs.
We understand that students, faculty and staff require timely information for planning, particularly those who may be travelling internationally. Today we are confirming that UBC has made the decision to continue to deliver the majority of programs online until February 7.
We remain committed to the full return to in-person teaching and learning, and will provide further updates as soon as we can. In the meantime, we would like to thank all our students, faculty and staff for responding quickly to facilitate this shift in educational delivery, in order to support UBC’s academic mission.
Global Travel Advisory
As of December 15, the Canadian Government has reintroduced a global travel advisory warning against non-essential travel due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19. With this update, UBC has made the decision to pause university travel outside of Canada for students while the global travel advisory is in place. This includes travel for co-op work terms, conferences and programs by OVPI Go Global like exchange and study abroad.
Per UBC’s Student Safety Abroad Policy, any student planning academic travel to destinations with travel advisories of “avoid non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” requires an exemption through the high-risk travel protocol managed by our Student Safety Abroad team. Our Safety Abroad team will continue to support graduate students with academically necessary research outside of Canada that can no longer be delayed to apply for exemption. Our Student Safety Abroad Manager reviews each application before forwarding it to a designated department head for final approval.
