BC ASSESSMENT PROPERTY VALUES AND ITS IMPACT

BC Assessment has recently mailed out property assessments and many property owners in Squamish are finding their assessments have increased once again leaving many residents to question how this will affect their 2023 property taxes. The District does not collect more money as a result of increased property assessments. Municipal property taxes are collected based on the money needed to provide municipal services. Property owners can expect a property tax increase in 2023 based on the 5.9% increase in revenue required. The District estimated this to be +$139 for the average residential property, and +$454 for the average business (based on 2021 assessments). How a property assessment changed from 2021 to 2022 will impact whether this increase is higher or lower.

RECYCLING TIP OF THE WEEK

Squamish has a high recycling contamination rate, which means that residents put materials in their recycling totes that are not accepted by the program. A high contamination rate poses risks to the process and staff handling the tote content along the way, but it can also negatively impact the quality of recycled material.

  • Glass is not accepted in our recycling curbside collection but can be disposed of for free at the Squamish Landfill or at the Squamish Bottle Depot on Queens Way.
  • Textiles should never go in your recycling tote – please donate or drop them off for free at the textiles bin at the Squamish Landfill.

You can also place your tree in your organics tote by doing the following:

  • Remove all tinsel and decorations
  • Cut off all branches
  • Cut the tree trunk to no longer than 3 feet and no more than 3 inches in diameter
  • Ensure all pieces easily fit into the tote, allowing the lid to close and lock.

Notice of Land Lease and Provision Of Assistance

The District of Squamish has given notice this week of its intention to grant a fifteen-year lease to the Squamish Valley Equestrian Association (“SVEA”), a nonprofit society, to operate and maintain an equestrian facility and related uses on 39101 Loggers Lane, Squamish. The District also intends to provide assistance to SVEA by providing the lease for less than its market value.
