FIRST RESPONDERS EXERCISE

An interagency exercise will be conducted on Sunday, October 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Squamish Public Library, with the participation of District staff and first responders.

The purpose of the exercise is to support interagency communications testing, and clarify roles and responsibilities of Squamish First Responder agencies during the initial phase of an emergency response.

Please note there will be a controlled perimeter around the Library as well as signage to indicate an exercise is underway. There will be no impacts to neighbours, surrounding businesses, and library operating hours.

BE BRIGHT AT NIGHT

As the rainy season sets in and the days get shorter, it's about that time to remember to Be Bright at Night.

Be Bright at Night is a campaign that urges cyclists and pedestrians to wear bright clothing and reflective gear when out on dark or dimly lit roads. As pedestrians, we can wear light-colored or reflective clothing, and reflective vests are also effective. Cyclists can mount lights on the front and back of their bikes. On evening walks, equip your pets with lights and reflective accessories.

We hope these tips help make our community safer in the evenings!

BEAR SMART COMMUNITY

The District's Community Bylaw Services is reminding Squamish residents to bring pumpkins inside at night or display them in a front window with a battery-operated tea light.

Help keep bears from getting in on the Halloween fun by keeping pumpkins out of their reach. And don't forget, garbage and organic totes should be tucked away or locked up tight, except on collection day.

For wildlife sightings or encounters, please call the Conservation officer Service 24-hour hotline at: 1-877-952-7277.

City Green Solutions is hosting a free Home Energy & Water Efficiency Seminar to help homeowners reduce energy bills and lower their home's environmental footprint through practical, cost-effective upgrades. The seminar will take place on Friday, November 1, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

Participants will learn how to save on utility bills and discover low-carbon options by understanding the embodied carbon impacts of various materials. The event will also provide information about FortisBC rebates available for homeowners implementing these strategies. Space is limited, snacks and coffee will be provided.

The District of Squamish is implementing a permanent restriction on kiteboarding from the Watersports Beach at Sp’akw’us Feather Park. Wingfoiling and windsurfing will continue to be permitted from the beach due to their contained nature.

While the risks of the downwind hazards and difficult onshore winds were known, the review further identified a significant level of risk to bystanders who may get in the way of long lines from kiteboards.

The restriction on kiteboarding aims to ensure the park is a place for every park user to safely enjoy.

ANNUAL WATERMAIN UPGRADES

Watermain flushing is underway.

Flushing helps remove stagnant water and unwanted build up in the pipes. During this process, you may notice brief periods where the water appears cloudy or discoloured or has a mild chlorine taste. However, the water remains safe to drink. If you experience any of these issues, simply flush your taps by running water until it clears.
