KIN Community Champions
(Undergraduate and Graduate Students)

In a desire to recognize the goodness of the human spirit during these challenging Covidean times, the School introduced an initiative called the “KIN Community Champions.” The initiative was rolled out at the onset of the pandemic last March to highlight KIN community members who are championing and supporting the needs of others and modelling leadership in the community.

If you have a story of a UBC Kinesiology member who is working to support others, initiating programs or research that have direct social impacts on the community, please let us know by emailing kin.communications@ubc.ca

Meet two KIN Community Champions:

2020 KIN Community Champion, Ava Katz reflects on life during Covid

"Back in April when I began volunteering to help seniors get groceries and run essential errands, I had no idea, like everyone else, how long this pandemic would last and how serious it would become.

Hopefully down the road we can look back at all this craziness, and even though many memories will be tough there will be good ones too."

2021 KIN Community Champion, Nilanga Aki Bandara advocates for self-care for healthcare workers

"The pandemic has completely changed our ways of life. Evidence from healthcare professionals working on the frontlines shows that their mental health has been negatively impacted by the pandemic. Our work advocates for systems-level changes, so that healthcare professionals have the support they need to take care of themselves and the patients they treat."

KUS Career Fair
(Undergraduate Students)

On Thursday, January 28th, the KUS Career Fair took place online and was a great success! Students had the opportunity to have one-on-one and group conversations with 35 unique, multidisciplinary professionals. This included clinical, healthcare, education, charity, and student engagement organizations. Professional connections were built, career exploration took place, and volunteer, job, and research opportunities were gained. Altogether, 290 undergraduate students were in attendance!

"I am interested in career prospects in physiotherapy, specifically with the PARC and Neuromotion clinics. I was able to speak with representatives from each clinic directly over zoom!" - Will Rioux, third-year Kinesiology student.

"I spoke with a representative from PURE and they were able to explain the types of research they do. It's definitely something I want to look into now!" - Janice Chan, first-year Kinesiology student.

If you weren't able to make it this time, there's always next year!
