PUBLIC NOTICE - TEMPORARY USE PERMIT

Proposed Temporary Use: To Allow for a Building Supply Outlet and Recycle Depot on the property at 40446 Government Road.

A copy of the proposed Temporary Use Permit No. DTU0062 can be emailed out by requests sent to planning@squamish.ca from July 18 to July 29 or viewed on the District's Online Development Showcase.

OPEN STREET DAY JULY 27

The Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association Open Street Day returns this Saturday! Walk, bike, skate or roll downtown for an all-day community event, and pop by our District of Squamish tent to chat with members of Council and staff about all things transportation

Please note Cleveland Avenue from Pemberton Avenue to Main Street will be a car-free zone from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.—If you are heading into Downtown Squamish:

  • Active transportation is encouraged!
  • Additional accessible parking stalls will be available on Second Avenue across from Municipal Hall.
  • Cleveland Avenue transit stops will be rerouted via Loggers Lane.

LOGGERS SPORTS FESTIVAL - AUGUST LONG WEEKEND

Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival is an annual ritual and an important reminder of Squamish's logging past.

The festival is jam-packed with family-friendly activities including a parade, wacky bed races, and the legendary pancake breakfast along with loggers sports events that attract competitors from around the world.

Congratulations on 67 years of Loggers Sports!

 

OUTSTANDING PROPERTY TAX PENALTY

A second 5% penalty will be applied on outstanding property taxes and utilities after July 31. To avoid the penalty, owners should pay before July 31.

THE RE-USE-IT FAIR IS BACK!

Bring your unwanted usable items or take away used treasures from someone else – completely for free!

This year, the Re-Use-It Fair will be held in a much smaller venue, so we cannot accept all categories of items.

When: August 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Brennan Park Recreation Centre Auditorium

What's accepted?

  • Small appliances in good working order or in need of minor repair.
  • Large appliances in good working order.
  • Furniture, household items, garden tools, sports equipment, pet accessories, and seasonal items in reasonable condition.

What's not accepted?

  • TVs, computers, printers, VCRs (recycle these at the Bottle Depot).
  • Toys and other kids’ accessories (there will be a specific kid’s swap in November).
  • Fabrics and clothing (there will be a clothing and book swap in October).
  • Books, music, games (there will be a clothing and book swap in October).
  • Mattresses (recycle these at the landfill).
  • Items broken or damaged beyond repair.

Please note:

Folks will be asked to self-sort. Volunteers will be on-site to help find the right location for items. Items need to be clean and in working order. We are unable to accept broken or dirty items.

We can only accept items that fit in the categories described. Furniture will be accepted based on weather.

This event is organized by the District of Squamish and the Squamish Climate Action Network to advance a circular economy and reduce avoidable waste. AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY PLAN

Age-friendly communities allow for healthy, safe and equitable aging. To help create our plan, the District of Squamish is reaching out to community members of all ages, especially seniors who are comfortable  sharing their experiences.

NOTICE OF TRAFFIC AND NOISE IMPACTS

Please note that crews will be doing Downtown Squamish traffic island maintenance from Monday, July 29 through Wednesday, July 31, in advance of the long weekend. Work will take place between 5 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  

Please anticipate lane closures and early morning noise.

Crews will be working on a project to remove hydrocarbon contaminated soil at 39619 Galbraith Avenue.

Work will start on August 6 and is targeted to complete September 10. Work will mostly occur within bylaw hours but will be starting as early as 2 a.m. and finishing as late as 6 p.m. Work will not be occurring on the weekend.

SP'AKW'US FEATHER PARK KITE CLOSURE

The watersports beach at Sp’akw’us Feather Park on the oceanfront remains temporarily closed to kites and kiteboarders. While an investigation is underway, kites are being restricted out of caution to ensure public safety.
 

Wing Foiling and windsurfing continue to be permitted.

 

 

 

STAGE 2 WATER RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT

Stage 2 divides the community into seven areas, and provides each area with ONE day upon which they can water WITH A SPRINKLER:

  • Monday - Valleycliffe, Hospital Hill
  • Tuesday - Downtown
  • Wednesday - Dentville, Business Park, North Yards
  • Thursday - Loggers Lane East, Quest University
  • Friday - Garibaldi Highlands
  • Saturday - Garibaldi Estates
  • Sunday - Brackendale

Even addresses: 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Odd addresses: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Pro Tip: Inexpensive automatic timers are a great way to pre-schedule your watering if you are not home.

2025 PERMISSIVE TAX EXEMPTION APPLICATIONS

If your organization can demonstrate eligibility, you are welcome to apply for an exemption. The application and policy are available online. The deadline to apply is July 31, 2024, for exemptions beginning for the 2025 taxation year.

LATEST INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

Work to upgrade and repair select watermains throughout Squamish is underway:

  • July: Government Road from Axen Road to Depot Road.
  • August: Thunderbird Ridge near Glacier View Drive.

Please expect traffic impacts near each area due to excavation work, and possible single-lane alternating traffic.

Active Kids Camp | 5.5-7 YRS

August 6-9, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Get your kids outdoors this summer! This camp provides opportunities for your kids to learn new skills, make new friends and have a lot of fun, and offers a range of activities and games each day including yoga, hiking, gymnastics, soccer and much more!

*NOTE: This camp will meet at Rose Park, NOT Brennan Park Recreation Centre. 

LEAP - Under The Sea | 3-5 YRS

August 12-16, 9-11 a.m.

Seashells, starfish and song! Your child will love to 'catch a wave' with our team to learn about ocean animals and their environment along with artwork you'll love! Children must be able to use the washroom independently.

Hip and/or Knee Recovery at The 55 Activity Centre

Wednesdays 1:45-2:45 p.m. and Friday 12-1 p.m.

Exercise is important after surgery to build strength and regain flexibility so that you can get back to normal daily activities. Participants must be a minimum of 3 months post-operation. No drop-ins available.
