National Indigenous Day

The month of June is Indigenous History Month, honouring the outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples in Canada. June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day and we encourage you to visit the Nanaimo Museum's traveling exhibit of Chief Dan George: Actor and Activist, go through the Snuneymuxw First Nations people exhibit and bring the kids for the matching Hul'q'umi'num' animal names game. The community is also invited to a celebration from 5-8 pm at Maffeo Sutton Park, hosted by the Mid-Island Metis Nation.

Bicycle Valet

This summer a new service, the Bicycle Valet, will be offered at various events! Starting with Canada Day festivities at Maffeo Sutton Park on Sunday, July 1, 2022. Save gas, reduce the stress of finding a parking spot and work off the Canada Day cake by riding your bike to the event. Check your bike into the Bicycle Valet, just like a coat check, and they will keep it safe while you enjoy the entertainment and activities throughout the day. All bikes are accepted including tandem bikes, cargo bikes, e-bikes and event strollers! When you're ready to go home, bring back the ticket stub and off you go!

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

  • Fourth Street is open, however it is still an active construction site, final construction and restoration works will be completed over the following weeks. Pedestrians please use caution (or an alternate route) as sidewalks are not yet finished. Drivers should expect single lane alternating traffic at times, and obey all traffic control signage and persons.
  • Metral Drive is still an active construction site, so please expect delays when navigating through the area, particularly north of Enterprise. The sensing induction loops at Enterprise are disconnected, so queuing will occur during peak hours until the intersection is complete and the signals are fully functioning again. All businesses remain open and accessible; however, some driveway accesses may be affected temporarily, so please utilize alternate accesses whenever possible.
  • Utility upgrades are taking place on Holland Road between Jingle Pot Road and Ashlee Road. Access to buses and local traffic only. Other commuters should plan an alternate route.
  • Utility upgrades are taking place on Cottleview Drive and Hillside Avenue between Caldwell Street and Pacific Edge Way. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Starting on June 15, Park Avenue between Fifth Street and Seventh Street will be closed in both directions for a sanitary sewer upgrade. The road closure will be in place for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Access is available for local traffic and emergency vehicles only. A detour will be in place using Bruce Avenue and the closure will remain in effect until the sewer upgrade project is completed in September.
