Province expands Team-Based Care model

The Government of Saskatchewan continues to strengthen access to care through significant investments in primary health care teams that bring health care providers together in a collaborative team environment. Patients benefit by connecting with the most appropriate care provider for their needs, such as a family physician, nurse practitioner, social worker, pharmacist, or other allied health professional.

SHA CARES - Living our Values

Stony Rapids was the thirteenth Saskatchewan community reached by a donor-funded program that brings RUHโ€™s trauma expertise to rural and northern communities, helping first responders and health-care teams build critical emergency response skills.

From June 22 to 24, the 11-member team worked with health care and emergency response teams from Stony Rapids and surrounding communities, teaching them to assess and stabilize patients and prepare them for transport to higher levels of care. In remote communities, the skills delivered through this training stay local long after the team has flown home.

 Recognition and Appreciation

Happy Halloween while in care

Halloween looks a little different when you're in the hospital, but thanks to the compassion and kindness of our staff and volunteers, there are still plenty of smiles, costumes and special moments to celebrate.

A heartfelt thank you to staff and volunteers across the Saskatchewan Health Authority who help make special moments possible for patients and families every day.

Here are some Halloween highlights from the pediatric units and NICU at Regina General Hospital and the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital, and staff from Primary Health Care working in CPAS and Home Care at the Idylwyld Centre in Saskatoon.

New Medicine Therapy Gym opens in Regina General Hospital

Patients at Regina General Hospital will have easier access to rehabilitation services with the opening of a new Medicine Therapy Gym on Nov. 2, 2026.

Made possible through funding from the Hospitals of Regina Foundation (HRF), the new therapy gym is located on the third floor (3B) of the hospitalโ€™s main block, closer to inpatient units and the patients who rely on therapy services during their hospital stay. The gym will serve patients from medicine, cardiac and pediatric units.

The new space provides a safe, spacious and well-equipped environment where patients can work on rebuilding strength, mobility and independence. Patients will be able to practice important activities such as walking, balancing, climbing stairs and transferring, while occupational therapists will have dedicated space to assess activities of daily living.

The gym will also feature new specialized rehabilitation equipment funded by HRF, including therapy mats, strengthening equipment, and swallowing assessment tools.

Bringing rehabilitation services closer to inpatient units will make therapy more accessible for patients while reducing the time required for staff to transport patients across the hospital.

The new gym provides patients and their care teams with a dedicated and welcoming environment focused on rehabilitation, recovery and helping patients regain the confidence and skills they need for the next stage of their care.

National Chronic Pain Awareness Week

National Chronic Pain Awareness Week (November 2โ€“8) highlights a challenge affecting over 8 million Canadians (1 in 5), with low-income populations experiencing higher rates. As the first line of defense, primary care providers can transform outcomes using these strategies:

  • Validate and Apply a Biopsychosocial Lens: Acknowledge biological, psychological, and social drivers to build trust and regulate the nervous system.
  • Set Functional Goals: Focus on improving daily life (mobility, work, sleep) over total pain elimination.
  • Promote Multimodal Care: Introduce physical therapy, psychology, and non-pharmacological care early.
  • Optimize Referrals: Include full history, imaging, and meds, emphasizing long-term self-management.

The Regina Chronic Pain Clinic offers specialized assessments and interdisciplinary care. Find referral forms at saskhealthauthority.ca.

Join SaskPain's webinar, "Beyond the Pain Score: Understanding Chronic Pain and Building a Whole-Person Treatment Plan" with Dr. Susan Tupper on Nov 4.

 Staff Information

On-site survey for SHA Accreditation Cycle

The fourth on-site survey of the second accreditation cycle will take place November 2-6, 2026. SHA Accreditation has been actively working with service lines in Integrated Rural Health, Continuing Care Provincial Strategy and EMS and Community Paramedicine, as well as the leaders responsible for Infection Prevention and Control and Medication Management.

Twenty-eight(28) surveyors, including one patient surveyor will conduct more than 160 administrative and clinical tracers at 66 sites throughout Integrated Rural Health and EMS and Community Paramedicine Services across the province. We are looking forward to this week to celebrate our successes and to learn about where we need to prioritize improvements in order to enhance patient safety.

A debriefing will be held on Friday November 6 at 10:30 a.m. wherein the surveyors will share their initial findings. This debrief is open to all SHA and affiliate staff, physicians, and patient family partners who are interested in the surveyors' findings.

More information and a link to the Microsoft Teams Invitation is located on the Integrated Rural Health Page of the Accreditation Site.

Code of the Month: Code Blue

Novemberโ€™s Code of the Month focuses on Code Blue: Cardio/Respiratory Arrest. Code Blue is used in situations where an unresponsive individual of any age requires resuscitation or is otherwise in need of immediate medical attention. In these situations, every second counts. Early recognition, rapid activation of emergency response procedures, and immediate intervention can significantly improve outcomes. Take a moment this month to familiarize yourself with your department's Code Blue response process and ensure you know how to quickly get help when every second matters. See the November Code of the Month for additional information.

If you have any questions, please contact the Health Emergency Management (HEM) team at SHA.HEM@saskhealthauthority.ca.
