This week...

Gift an experience this year, make an official Nanaimo Bar and get ready to solve the Frosty Bucket clues. Read on for more!

Be Snow Prepared

Make sure you are prepared and do your part to prevent flooding by clearing covered catch basins, shoveling sidewalks and staying off the roads when possible.

Please take extra caution in parks and on trails. Boardwalks, bridges and walkways may be slippery. Wear proper footwear and be winter-ready to enjoy it to the fullest!

Public works will focus on priority areas as weather changes occur.

Wondering where to get updates? Check local radio stations and follow @cityofnanaimo social media platforms for possible program cancellations and other updates. In the event of an emergency, public notifications will be sent out through Voyent Alert

Swim Schedules

Swimming schedules at both the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre and Beban Park Pool will continue to follow a modified schedule until further notice. This is being done in an effort to accommodate as many patrons as possible in the pools while Beban Pool continues to undergo repairs.

Swimming lesson registration for the winter set that was scheduled for December 15 will now be delayed until 2022. Once a date for the full opening of Beban Park Pool is confirmed, a new lesson start date will be chosen and communicated.

Reducing Consumption

As you sit down to think about what you'd like to give or receive for Christmas this year, the City is encouraging you to choose gifts with as little waste as possible. Gift a lesson, a drop-in session, tickets to an event or an experience! Together we can reduce consumption. If you do choose things, choose items with as little packaging as possible, wrap it in recyclable paper and be sure to recycle it right! Use the What Goes Where tool for items that don't belong in the blue bin. This year, let's make sure as little as possible ends up in the landfill.

CITY OF NANAIMO ZERO WASTE INITIATIVES

Resting Totems

Have you ever wondered about the resting totem poles at Bowen Park? Jocelyn Matwe (Shaw TV) produced this story about the four Snuneymuxw First Nation totem poles that stood in the park for several decades. Daniel Elliott, Indigenous Artist and Elder, shares his knowledge and teachings on the tradition of laying totem poles to rest so that they can still be appreciated while they slowly decay and return to the earth. This video was produced with respect to the Snuneymuxw peoples, whose traditional territory it was filmed on and whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.
