Will you be able to travel tomorrow?

We were surprised, but above all saddened to learn recently of the closure of the Aviation MH school in Rivière-du-Loup. This closure leaves a big vacuum in this region of Quebec. We believe it is necessary to remind the general public of the role that an airport and flight schools can play in the workings of aviation. We invite you to join us in promoting general aviation and to share the following message with your loved ones, friends and co-workers.

Despite sustained efforts by pilots to live in harmony with their neighbourhood, the survival of general aviation in Quebec is increasingly precarious. Several recent events have raised fears for its future, such as the permanent closure of Mascouche and Les Cèdres airports, the failure of the project for a new aerodrome in St-Roch-de-l'Achigan, the expulsion pure and simple by the municipality of the flight school operating in Drummondville, the insistent complaints about noise around long-established airports and the imposition of very expensive airport fees at Mirabel.

In recent days, there has been an administrative dispute surrounding the management of the Rivière-du-Loup airport, which immediately leads to the closure of a regional flight school and which raises fears for its survival in the medium or long term. We can also fear, without too much chance of being mistaken, that because of this dispute, the Bas-St-Laurent region will no longer receive one of the main aerial rendezvous in Quebec anytime soon.

The airports used by general aviation in Quebec are important assets that must be protected by the municipalities that are lucky enough to have one on their territory and by all levels of government. They are unique centers of economic activity and training at the local and regional level and exceptional economic development tools for those who know how to take advantage of them, such as Mont-Laurier, Saint-Hyacinthe, Rocher Percé and the regions of Saguenay - Lac-Saint-Jean and southern Abitibi. In this regard, the Gatineau airport, which has just updated its facilities and which hosted the flight school chased out by the city of Drummondville, as well as the La Tuque airport,

Without them, your next dream trip might not be possible, for lack of a pilot to get you there!

Aviateurs.Québec welcomes air cadets as the first solo

This year, it is the return of pilot training with the Air Cadet program. The program brings together young people between the ages of 17 and 18, specially selected by the Air Cadet League . For the Quebec region, there are 42 young people on two training sites: the Bromont site which took 23 young people and the St-Honoré site with 19 young people. They are all in training to obtain a private pilot's license.

Aviateurs.Québec, in order to highlight the exceptional career of these young people, distributed memberships as Premier solo to 20 young people from this cohort.

We wish them the best of continuations.

Between heaven and earth, the passion of two pilots for their profession

For some, the thought of flying is terrifying. For others, it's a drug! This is the case for Valérie Pamart, a business jet and seaplane pilot for 25 years, and Dominique Prinet, a retired bush and tundra pilot.

Established in France since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Valérie Pamart has spent a good part of her career in Vancouver. Passionate about aviation since her first flight at age 10, she now has pilot licenses in four different countries. Having worked for Air Canada or as a private jet pilot, she now specializes in seaplane piloting.

A true modern-day adventurer, Dominique Prinet was a bush and tundra pilot in the Far North and in the Arctic in the 1960s and 1970s. In 2021, he is publishing the account of some of his extraordinary adventures under the title Flying to Extremes, Memoirs of a Nordic Bush Pilot . He obtained his private helicopter pilot license at the age of 70. Now 83, he is retiring as a sailing instructor and instructor evaluator.

A podcast on these two pilots is available at ici.radio.canada/ohdio
