Announcements:

COVID-19 — Planning for 2021/22 Winter Session, Term 2

UBC will approach the start of Term 2 with a brief, interim period where classes will begin online.

Classes will begin as scheduled on January 10, with instruction provided online until January 24. Research and scholarship activities on UBC campuses continue under current safety plans.

Campuses will remain open, including student housing, student services, and all libraries. Our intention is to enable a safe return to fully in-person learning and instruction on January 24.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will update the community in the first week of the new year. Thank you to those who have continued to provide important services on our campuses and to everyone for continuing to support a safe environment at UBC.

As of December 15, the Canadian Government has reintroduced a global travel advisory warning against non-essential travel due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19. With this update, UBC has made the decision to pause university travel outside of Canada for students while the global travel advisory is in place. This includes travel for co-op work terms, conferences and programs by OVPI Go Global like exchange and study abroad.

Per UBC’s Student Safety Abroad Policy, any student planning academic travel to destinations with travel advisories of “avoid non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” requires an exemption through the high-risk travel protocol managed by our Student Safety Abroad team. Our Safety Abroad team will continue to support graduate students with academically necessary research outside of Canada that can no longer be delayed to apply for exemption. Our Student Safety Abroad Manager reviews each application before forwarding it to a designated department head for final approval.

Awards:

Aboriginal Graduate Fellowships

The University of British Columbia offers multi-year fellowships to Master's and Doctoral Indigenous students. Award winners are selected on the basis of academic merit through an annual competition, administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Approximately a dozen new fellowships are offered each year.

Each fellowship provides a stipend of $18,200 per year for Doctoral students or a stipend of $16,175 per year for Master’s students. Additionally, AGF recipients are eligible to receive tuition funding. Tuition funding will not exceed the current value of the standard Doctoral or Master's degree tuition fees. Applicants for Master's funding will receive fellowship funding until the end of their second year of Master’s studies; applicants for Doctoral funding will receive fellowship funding for four years or until the end of their fifth year of Doctoral studies, whichever comes first. In all cases, continued fellowship support is conditional on satisfactory academic progress. Recipients of Master’s fellowship funding must re-apply to be considered for Doctoral funding.

All Indigenous students are eligible to apply, but priority is given to Indigenous students whose traditional territory falls, at least in part, within Canada. This includes Canadian First Nations, Métis or Inuit students and may include Indigenous students from Alaska and other states of the USA. The University may request further information to confirm Indigenous eligibility.

Application deadline: Friday, January 28th, 2022 @ 4:00pm PT

Supervisors

In September 2020 Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) launched a new service for the advertisement of faculty, graduate student, and postdoc positions through their websites (for graduate students and postdocs), and, if relevant, external career portals.

All faculty and staff are able to post any open positions at https://faculty-staff.grad.ubc.ca/recruitment/job-ads. Student positions will be advertised on grad.ubc.ca in the project directory and embedded into the G+PS researcher profiles. Postdoc positions will be advertised in the Postdoc Career Opportunities website.

If opted for in the posting, all faculty, student and postdoc posts will also be shared with external portals via system-to-system integration, requiring no additional work. These portals are included:
