TNRD SECURES LAND TENURE FOR NEW FIRE HALL IN LOON LAKE
Kamloops, BC - July 31, 2020 - The Loon Lake community is one step closer to a new fire hall with the confirmation of a Crown Lease secured from the provincial government.
The 2.64 acre Crown Lease is located approximately half way along Loon Lake, within 8 km of the most populous area of the community. The site was identified by a subject matter expert through a Fire Services Review done on behalf of the TNRD.
In July of 2017, Loon Lake’s fire hall was destroyed as a result of the Elephant Hill Wildfire. Since that time, the TNRD has been working to secure land to construct a new fire hall in consultation and cooperation with several stakeholders, including area First Nations and various Provincial ministries.
“We are thrilled to be able to announce this land tenure for the new fire hall”, said Jason Tomlin, Manager of Fire Protection Services. “We’re extremely thankful for the support of MLA Jackie Tegart, Electoral Area Director Sally Watson, and the entire Loon Lake community for their patience during this lengthy process. The Loon Lake volunteer firefighters have shown incredible commitment and tenacity in keeping the community safe while working through some challenging conditions.”
In 2018 Fraserway RV, through the Adventurer Foundation, committed $275,000 towards the construction of the new fire hall in Loon Lake. In an ongoing effort to support the Fire Department and the rebuild project, the TNRD’s Fire Protection Advisory Committee has started a community bottle drive fundraising program. Empties can be dropped off at the Loon Lake Transfer station that then get sorted, bagged and sent in for refund. The TNRD has also received other organized and personal donations for this project.
Design and preliminary ground works are underway with construction expected to start early in 2021. The Crown Lease has been secured for the next 30 years.
The Loon Lake Fire Department is actively recruiting to add to its dedicated ranks. For more information, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
