SQUAMISH ESTUARY TRAIL NETWORK CLOSED DUE TO BEAR ATTACKS

The Squamish Estuary trail network (Wildlife Management Area) will remain closed for at least two weeks following two separate surprise attacks involving individuals and a sow with a yearling Thursday morning.

Barricades and signage have been placed at all entrances to keep the public from entering. The public is asked to respect the closure for their own safety and to help ensure the survival of the bears.

Residents should use extra vigilance when out on any trail across Squamish during this important feeding stage as bears prepare to hibernate. Consider travelling in pairs or groups, keep dogs on leash, make noise and carry bear spray. These two serious incidents are a reminder that bears can be unpredictable and that being alert and prepared on the trail could save a life.

Please continue to report any wildlife sightings or encounters to the Conservation Officer Service Hotline at 1.877.952.7277.

DARKER MONTHS AHEAD REIGNITE “BE BRIGHT AT NIGHT”

The District of Squamish, ICBC, and RCMP are once again reminding residents to take extra caution when outside with the annual Be Bright at Night campaign that focuses on safety and visibility during the darkest months of the year. The Be Bright at Night campaign, launched initially by the Squamish Trails Society, is a plea for all cyclists, skateboarders and pedestrians to wear something bright, fluorescent, or reflective when travelling through the community after dark, or during dull, rainy days. Being bright should also be adopted during dull, rainy days when it’s more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and cyclists due to oncoming headlights, rain and wet roads. Drivers are reminded to also take extra care as visibility worsens at this time of year.

ORGANIC TOTE TIPS

Did you know that compostable or biodegradable plastic bags are not permitted in your organics tote?

Municipalities that have allowed compostable plastic bags in their organics programs report higher levels of contamination from all types of plastic, and the non-compostable plastics are much harder for the compost facility to identify and sort out. Paper bags, newspaper, or specially designed paper kitchen catcher liners are great acceptable alternatives.

COMMUNITY NOTICES AND EVENTS

Forest thinning work continues near the Squamish Airport

As forest thinning work continues near the Squamish Airport, residents are advised that work will occasionally impact parts of the Ray Peters Trail. Signage will be in place along the trail to alert residents of any access limitations as they occur. Please stay out of the signed work areas for your safety.

The area of work was identified as a high priority for fuel treatment in the District of Squamish Community Wildfire Protection Plan 2017 Update. Work has been approved through the District and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations in conjunction with local stakeholders and considerations of riparian areas, bird nesting and other wildlife.

Work is expected to run through March 2023. Follow the link below to read the full story.

COMING UP AT THE LIBRARY

Quest Lecture Series: Can an AI be Sentient? (online)

November 15, 7 - 8:30 p.m.

Blake Lemoine, a former engineer at Google, went public in July 2022 with his belief that a chatbot called LaMDA is sentient. For this view, he was mocked by other engineers and ridiculed in the mainstream media—and then fired by Google. In this talk, I consider whether Lemoine’s views have any validity, whether Lemoine had a point, whether the public reaction was justified, and what obligations we would have towards a truly sentient machine.
