Did you know? The City website has a a calendar where licensed Food Trucks are able to book ahead at City locations to reserve their spot and let their customers know where they are going to be. Food truck/trailer vendors can reserve a food vending site in designated City park locations up to two months in advance. Check it out at

Spring GoByBike Week

GoByBike Week has officially begun! 🚲☀️ Check out our celebration stations across the city, grab some free goodies, and enjoy various activities.

Remaining Celebration Stations:

  • June 3: Boxwood Road and Bowen Road (across the street from Beban Park) from
    9 to 11 am
  • June 4: E&N Trail Station, Giggleswick Place entrance from 7 to 9:30 am
  • June 5: Front Street and Museum Way from 4 to 6 pm
  • June 6: Boundary Avenue (NRGH) parking lot from 6:45 – 9 am
  • June 7: Wrap-Up Celebration and Charity Bike Ride with live music, Maffeo Sutton Park from 11 am to 1 pm

Pride Parade:

  • June 8: Pride Parade, bike valet and GoByBike booth with DJ, meet on Selby Street in front of White Rabbit at 9.30 am, parade starts at 11 am

Volunteers Needed

Nanaimo will host the British Columbia 55+ Games from September 9 to 13, 2025 at venues across the City. The 55+ Games are the largest annual multi-sport event in BC. The event will encompass 32 sport competitions as well as cultural and social opportunities, and could see up to 4,000 participants plus coaches and spectators attend the Nanaimo event.

Volunteers are the backbone of the 55+ BC Games, playing a vital role in bringing this annual multi-sport event to life. From assisting with event logistics and athlete coordination to providing information and support to spectators, volunteers ensure the Games run smoothly and successfully. Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

  • Sports
  • Transportation
  • Finance & Admin
  • Special Events
  • Operations and Data Entry
  • Photography
  • First-Aid/Medical
  • Fundraising
  • Hosts
  • Medals/Results
  • Volunteer Management

Fire Ban in Effect

All open burning is banned throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, which includes the City of Nanaimo. The ban applies to open fires of any size, campfires, fireworks, sky lanterns, tiki torches, burn barrels and cages, binary exploding targets and chimineas (outdoor stoves that use wood as a fuel source). These bans apply to all public and private land and are in place until October 31, 2025, or until the order is rescinded by BC Wildfire Service.

Please remember that smoking is not permitted in city parks or on city trails.  We are already experiencing dry conditions, and they are expected to continue into summer so let's work together to keep our parks safe.

Did you know? June is Recreation and Parks Month! It’s a month to celebrate the vital role that parks and recreation play in enhancing community health and well-being across Canada. Nanaimo is home to over 1,000 hectares of parks and open space and over 180 trails comprising of playgrounds, water parks, disc golf, tennis courts, pickleball courts, sports fields and more!

We invite you to join us in making Nanaimo a more vibrant, healthy and fun community.

Trunk Sale

The City of Nanaimo is once again hosting the annual Nanaimo Recycles Car Trunk Sale. Registration is now open for vendors looking to sell gently used household items.

The first Trunk Sale takes place on Saturday, June 21, from 9 am to 2 pm in the Country Club Centre parking lot. The second event will take place on Saturday, August 23, from 9 am to 2 pm at the Vancouver Island University in parking lots L and M. These free-to-attend reuse events aim to give unwanted household items a longer lease on life and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Youth Poetry Contest

The City of Nanaimo’s Youth Poet Laureate, Paige Pierce, is hosting a Youth Poetry Competition. Submit a poem of any style, length, or topic for a chance to win prizes! Poems must be appropriate for school-aged audiences. To be eligible as Nanaimo’s Youth Poetry Contest, candidates must be under the age of 18 (youth) and reside within the City of Nanaimo limits. The submission deadline is Sunday, June 15 at 11:59 pm.

Join Poet Laureate Neil Surkan and Victoria’s former Poet Laureate Marie Metaphor Specht, as well as special guests, Mary Ann Moore and Lee Groan for an evening of poetry on Wednesday, June 11 at 7 pm in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre’s Piper’s Lagoon Lobby (Entrance at 80 Commercial Street).

Marie Metaphor Specht is a multidisciplinary artist, poet and educator living on the unceded territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən- and SENĆOTEN-speaking peoples. A long-time member of the Canadian spoken word scene, Marie was the 6th Poet Laureate of Victoria, BC(2023-2025).

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Here’s a list of up-to-date information on City construction projects.

  • Commercial Street between Wharf Street and Church Street is closed to vehicles and Bastion Street is closed to vehicles between Skinner Street and Front Street. FREE daily 2-hour parking is available along downtown streets and on Levels 2 & 3 of the Bastion Street Parkade for the duration of the project.
  • Sewer upgrades along Railway Avenue began on April 22 and will continue until the end of July. A road closure will be in effect on Railway Avenue June 3 to 13, 24 hours a day on weekdays. Local access only. Please use the detour setup along Park Avenue.
  • The Townsite Area Utility Upgrades will see utility upgrades continuing on Millstone Avenue throughout May. Traffic will be reduced to SLAT as required.
  • There will be daytime lane closures on Bowen Road, Northfield Road, Boxwood Road and Rosstown Road as part of the Midtown Gateway project, expect delays. From June 1 to 6, asphalt paving will be completed nightly between 6 pm and 6 am. Expect delays, lane closures, traffic signal outages and detours. Commuters are asked to use an alternate route & avoid the area. Get the latest updates, including detailed maps at www.nanaimo.ca/goto/MidtownGateway

Note: All businesses in the construction areas are open unless otherwise posted. When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions. Remember that construction zone speed limits are 30 km/hr unless otherwise posted. If you know your commute is taking you through any of the areas below, please allow for additional time and plan ahead.
