SNOW AND ICE CONTROL UPDATES

District of Squamish snow-clearing crews have worked hard this week to keep Squamish moving.

As a reminder, District snow-clearing priorities are in this order:

  1. Keep priority routes open for emergency vehicles and public transportation routes;
  2. Keep business areas and civic buildings routes accessible; then
  3. Provide access to residential properties.

After the storm has passed, crews then restore mobility on residential streets as well as remove snow off the roads to permit drainage.

LATEST FROM THE BUILDERS' CORNER

The District of Squamish is noticing damage to concrete sidewalks from salting during the winter months. Concrete that is poured in either too hot or too cold temperatures can be more susceptible to damage from salt. Concrete pours will ideally occur early enough to provide enough time for proper curing to avoid spalling or other damage from snow and ice management. With supply chain issues in mind, the District is aware that it may be difficult to plan effectively and recommends that developers work with their contractors, tenants, and clients to ensure they use salt that is appropriate for use on concrete, especially if the concrete is new.

For anyone with a Servicing Agreement for offsite works, even if sidewalk safe salt is used and damages offsite concrete this is considered a deficiency and the developer is responsible for repairs. This is regardless of whether salting is completed by the developer’s contractor or by new owners after occupancy.

 WASTE TOTE TIPS

Wildlife is preparing for the winter and bears are still feeding as much as possible. You might find your totes knocked over more than usual and discover more traces of wildlife activity in your neighbourhood. Please be especially mindful about managing your totes in a way that deters wildlife from trying to access them.

  • If you can, secure your totes inside a garage or shed.
  • In your organics bin, cover and layer food scraps with yard waste or newspaper whenever possible.
  • If possible, keep meat, fish, and bones in your freezer or fridge until collection day.
  • For pickup days, only put your totes out and unclip the locks on the morning of.
