Featuring branding from the Big Store on the Ladner waterfront, Lanning, Fawcett, and Wilson, this custom chocolate box was produced somewhere between 1910-1920. Although ownership has changed hands over the years, this landmark building still stands at the corner of Chisolm Street and Delta Street. If you look in the background of the archival photo (1984-098-022) taken inside the store, there is an ad for Cadbury’s Chocolates featuring a similar font to the one used on this chocolate box. We recently completed a project to scan photographs and improve existing database descriptions for the Helen and Harry Maxwell Family Fonds. Harry’s father operated the Fashion Stables business in Ladner, one of the town’s livery (horse) stables. Harry became a fisherman and served in WWII with the Fishermen’s Reserve and later the Canadian Army. Our collection has dozens of photos of Harry and his crewmates in the reserve serving on the boat ‘Joan W. II’. Helen Maxwell was perhaps Ladner’s most well-known seamstress and did work for much of the community. Delta works with great cultural community partners.
