UBCM 2025

Ministry Appointments

Council provided direction to staff regarding appointment requests with Ministers and Ministry staff for the 2025 Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Conference in September 2025. Council indicated they would like to request appointments with the Ministry of Forest, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs. Appointments are confirmed by provincial staff in late August.

Resource Communities Initiative - UBCM resolution and proposed session 

Council received an invitation from the City of Campbell River Council to join to an advocacy movement aimed at strengthening the voice of resource-dependent communities in provincial decision-making. The city submitted a resolution to UBCM and it has applied to host a session at  the 2025 Convention.

Council voted to write a letter the City of Campbell River expressing support for the initiative and to indicate Golden’s interest in collaborating on the advocacy effort.

2024 Annual Report
Staff presented the 2024 Annual Report in June as required by law.

Recreation Services 

Golden Arena

Council voted in favour of a two-week extension to the historical ice pad operational season at the Golden and District arena and increase the historical annual operating budget by $30,000 to accommodate this increase in services levels, pending approval of the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.

Golden Municipal Swimming Pool

Council voted in favour of staff drafting a consult-based budget, in partnership with the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, to explore options for expanding the scope of service and required upgrades at the outdoor pool while comparing estimates for a new outdoor and/or indoor facility.
 

Project Updates and News

Paving and Patching

Our annual paving and patching program began this month. Construction will occur in the following locations:

  • Spot patching on Granite Drive and Quartz Crescent.
  • Spot patching on East and West Trans-Canada Highway frontage roads.
  • 10th Avenue North, northbound lane at 1001.
  • Portions of 10th Street South in the 1200 and 1300 blocks.
  • Portion of 14th Avenue South at Alexander Park Elementary School.
  • 9th Avenue South from 9th to 11th Streets South.
  • Portion of 9th Street South in the 900 Block.
  • 8th Avenue South from 8th to 13th Streets South.

Please be advised that during construction there may be traffic disruptions and delays and in some areas street parking will not be permitted until paving work has been completed.

The Town of Golden is investing $300,000 from the Canadian Community Building Fund and an additional $400,000 from the Roads and Sidewalks Reserve to support this work in 2025.

Summer Recreation

The Recreation summer schedule is now in full effect! 

The pool will be packed with action all summer long with lane swims and public swims every day of the week and WIBIT Swims every Friday night!

We have wrapped up our National Lifeguard course and we have nine new lifeguards ready to take to the pool deck!

Come out and celebrate Canada Day with us! Public swim hours on Canada Day:

  • 12 to 1:40 p.m.
  • 1:45 to 3:15 p.m.
  • 3:20 to 5 p.m.

Evening drop-in programs at the Rec Plex will continue all summer long, including Sunday volleyball, Wednesday pickleball and badminton, and Thursday basketball.

Don’t forget that the best way to reserve your spot for your favourite programs is to pre-register! You can register for programs up to one week in advance.

Be safe, share the space!

Summer is here and it's the perfect time to hit the trails and pathways! 

Before heading out on the trails and pathways around Golden, don't forget to brush up on safety and etiquette tips at  golden.ca/trailsandpathways

The Trails and Pathways page has information and maps, and tips for cyclists, e-bikes and e-scooters.

Have fun and safely share these spaces by:

  • Slowing down and yielding  when approaching pedestrians.
  • Passing on the left, leaving space, and using your voice, bell or horn to warn others of passing.
  • For pedestrians, don't block the path and stay to the right of the path.
  • If walking on a street with no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
  • For dog owners, keep your dog on a leash in on-leash areas.
  • If your dog doesn't have recall, it shouldn't be off leash.
