In preparation for the RVA at Nilgaut aerodrome at the end of July, François Martel and Patrick Vergobbi are continuing their efforts to improve the runway at Nilgaut aerodrome. Last week-end, the threshold of runway 19 was cleaned, which gives an extra 250 feet for takeoff.
The aerodrome Nilgaut is a place that exactly meets the definition of a bush runway, isolated, remote, in sand and gravel, surrounded by fairly tall trees in the middle of the forest... and paw prints of moose... No wi-fi or cell coverage, nearest convenience store is a hundred miles away. The place offers the most attractive decor and environment for lovers of bush adventure, wild camping or simply for a picnic day.
The track: 46° 35'37.78” N - 77° 23'10.23 “W
Altitude: 950', length 3500'x 50'
Orientation 01-19
Surface: firm, gravel-asphalt mixture.
The sides along the 50' runway are well cleared, 150' to 200' of trees on each side, soft sand surroundings and short vegetation. Spruce trees about 30 feet high surround 01-19 and can generate turbulence or crosswind shear. The height of the trees at the end of the runway lengthens the touchdown point on landing, a condition to be carefully assessed before landing, this requires vigilance on landing and take-off. Also be familiar with the performance of your aircraft and the weight and balance data. Do not forget the altitude of the runway, 950' in hot weather increases the takeoff distance.
