Aéro Montréal

Aéro Montréal's mission is to mobilize stakeholders in Quebec's aerospace ecosystem to support its global reach, innovation capacity and growth.

Message from The President

Guillemets

Dear members, dear partners,

I am pleased to send you my best wishes for good health and success in the projects you will be undertaking in the new year.

As we look ahead to 2023, Aéro Montréal is preparing to further advance the new initiatives we launched last year that are strategic for your businesses.

We will also continue our efforts to build a more sustainable future through two specific initiatives.

Two of our members ended the year by achieving the first level of the Eco-responsibility initiative. I would like to congratulate Tecnickrome aéronautique and Abipa, as well as all the companies that have recently committed to working with us to improve their practices. Through the Inclusive Succession Planning initiative, we will also continue our efforts to strengthen our talent pool and make it more inclusive and diverse. This will be supported by the recently established Diversity Committee.

Our team will also work to promote cybersecurity training and skills development for our members through a dedicated initiative. In addition, we will pursue our international outreach efforts by ensuring Québec's presence at key events such as the Paris Air Show.
Finally, we will continue to develop other projects that have been helping your companies for several years. In short, our team is already very enthusiastic about promoting Québec's expertise locally, nationally and internationally in innovative ways!

To support these great projects, Aéro Montréal is pleased to welcome Mélanie Lussier as Executive Director. This new appointment will also allow us to ensure the succession of the CEO. In her new role, Mélanie will be responsible for managing our internal files, as well as our working groups and committees. She will also be in charge of implementing the initiatives entrusted to us by governments and for managing human resources of the Aéro Montréal team.

As president of the cluster, I will now focus my efforts on managing key external aerospace issues, including institutional, international and government relations. I will also contribute to the development of the strategic plan and continue to act as spokesperson and brand ambassador. I look forward to working with Mélanie to ensure the progress of our sector's strategic and priority files. Welcome back to Aéro Montréal, Mélanie!

SUZANNE M. BENOÎT, President of Aéro Montréal

A costly illegal strike, version 2.0

On June 11, 2020, the Superior Court of Quebec allowed in part a class action against the Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec – Construction (FTQ C). This class action was composed of workers and employers with fewer than 50 employees who were deprived of work or wages as a result of illegal walkouts at several construction sites in Quebec in the fall of 2011.

The Superior Court concluded that by not taking action when the construction industry was paralysed, the FTQ-C was at fault of omission. The Court ordered the FTQ-C to pay approximately $9.9 million to compensate for lost wages and work, among other things, and ordered collective recovery of this amount. It also ordered the FTQ-C to pay damages for lost profits and additional costs to the employers and moral damages to the workers, and ordered the individual recovery of these amounts[1].

The FTQ-C appealed the Superior Court's decision, asking that the class action be dismissed or, alternatively, that the individual recovery of lost wages and work be ordered and that the other counts of compensatory damages be dismissed.
