The UBC School of Journalism, Writing, and Media and UBC Public Humanities are pleased to invite you to “Rethinking Objectivity: The Role Of Journalism In A Social Justice Era,” featuring UBC Journalist-in-Residence, Eternity Martis, for a virtual event on March 18 at 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM PST, as part of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Writing and Journalism Speaker Series. The talk will be facilitated by associate professor of teaching, Kathryn Getsinger.

CONNEACTIVITY: MSSA Panel Event

The Media Studies Student Association (MSSA) is hosting a panel event for creative industries. This event will feature industry professionals and UBC alumni in fields such as UI/UX Design, Journalism, Game Design, Marketing, Film, Talent Acquisition and Technology!

Panelists at companies such as Nintendo, Circuit Stream, and Daily Hive, will talk about their experiences in the work field, their paths towards where they are now, and answering any questions you may have!

Imagining New Stories

The series has examined the power of storytelling in social movements and the interaction between storytelling and relationships of power. These speakers will speak about the power of imagination to articulate, envision, and create transformative futures.

On March 25, a panel of Arts alumni will share their experience working in tech and explain why employers find an Arts degree so valuable. At The Art of Tech, you’ll learn about the diverse and compelling careers that are possible in the fast-growing digital space, and what you can do now to explore these career opportunities.

Designing Books, Printing History: Celebrating Designer Elizabeth Friedlander through Private Press and Digital Edition
March 29, 2021, 10:00-11:00AM (PST)

Join Graham Moss, private letterpress printer at Incline Press (Oldham, England) and Lauren Elle DeGaine (Department of English) to celebrate the launch of a digital edition of Incline Press’s 1998 publication. Originally hand-bound and letterpress-printed in an edition of 350 copies, this rare monograph is now open-access online through UVic Libraries.

CHAN CENTRE DOT COM SERIES: Marina Thibeault
April 9th, 2021, 7:00 PM (PST)

Named Radio-Canada‘s Classical Revelation for 2016-2017, violist and UBC School of Music professor Marina Thibeault’s “plangent tone and expressive phrasing” (The Strad) foreground a great richness in her playing that is on display across genres. Her 2020 JUNO Award-nominated album ELLES honours groundbreaking women and non-binary composers, and for this performance Thibeault presents a wide-ranging program of works for solo viola by Ana Sokolović, Dorothy Chang, and Melody McKiver.

We are accepting all works: Essays, Short Films, Visual Artworks, Music, and more. Submitted works will be shared on the BMS and BMS Peer Mentor  communication platforms. In addition, every student who submits will be entered in a draw to win a $25 Starbucks gift card!

MOA Shop Emerging Indigenous Artist Contest
Deadline: April 30th, 2021

Are you an emerging Indigenous artist, between 15 and 25 years old, with a story to tell? Submit a design that expresses your identity, and the MOA Shop will help share it with the world. The winning artwork will be printed on a t-shirt and sold and promoted exclusively through the MOA Shop for one year. The winner will receive both a $250 prize and royalties from every sale.
