This Week...

Drop, cover and hold on during the province-wide Great BC ShakeOut earthquake drill, remember to clean catch basins and join our StoryWalk at Beban Park. Read on for more!

Drop, Cover and Hold On!

An earthquake could happen at any time, in fact, there are thousands of minor earthquakes in BC every year. Are you ready for the big one? You may only have seconds to react before strong shaking knocks you down and things around you begin to fall.

On October 16 prepare to drop, cover and hold on as the province-wide Great BC ShakeOut earthquake drill will take place at 10:16 a.m. Residents can participate by registering at www.shakeoutbc.ca

Also beginning at 10:16 a.m. on October 16, a test alert of the City's emergency alert system, VoyentAlert!, will be sent out. Residents can signup for the VoyentAlert! at www.voyent-alert.com/community/#registration

Catch Basins

Keeping catch basins clear of leaves, garbage and other debris helps rainwater flow freely into the storm drains, reducing the risk of flooding in your neighbourhood. You can make a difference by using a rake or shovel to remove debris from catch basins near your home or along your street — especially during heavy rain or in the fall.

If you notice flooding or blocked drains that you can’t clear safely, please contact Public Works at 250-758-5222.

Fall GoByBike Week

Fall GoByBike Week has wrapped up, and what a ride it was! Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this event a huge success. Together, we biked an incredible 6,732 kilometres â€” that’s like pedaling from Nanaimo to Mexico City and back, saving over 900 litres of gas and cutting 1,459 kilograms of greenhouse gases — the same as planting 72 trees or taking 12 cars off the road for a week.

With 282 riders and 53 teams, this was more than just a cycling challenge — it was a movement. Whether you rode solo or with a team, your efforts made a real impact. You helped spark conversations, reduce emissions and promote active transportation across Nanaimo.

StoryWalk

Bring the family and enjoy a fun, self-guided outdoor reading adventure at Altrusa Playground in Beban Park!

From October 15 to November 5, follow the pages of Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O’Connell as they’re displayed along the trail. It’s a great way to combine literacy, nature and play.

Perfect for young readers and Halloween fun — don’t miss this seasonal StoryWalk experience!

Swim Meet
There will be a swim meet on Saturday, October 18 at Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. Please note: there will be limited pool availability during the meet, 25M lane swimming available 6 to 7 am and 1 to 9 pm, there will be no diving boards available and shallow and deep water aquafit cancelled for that day.

Starlight Skate

Join us for a magical evening on ice at the Starlight Skate! Enjoy music, lights and fun for all ages on Sunday, October 19, from 4 to 6 pm at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

This is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle while enjoying lap skating with our soft light stars and passive LED lighting.

Halloween Howl

Our spooktacular Halloween Howl is back! Join us for a morning of frightful fun at Beban Pool on Sunday, October 26, from 9 am to 12 pm. Brave the haunted slide tower, dive into pumpkin dunks, float past snakes in the river, explore the spooky sensory station and enjoy a variety of fun pool games. It’s a great way for families to celebrate Halloween in a safe and splashy way.

Regular admission rates apply. Costumes are welcome — but make sure they’re pool-friendly!

Family Fishing Challenge

Our Family Fishing Challenge takes place October 19 to 26. Get outside and go fishing at one of our local lakes. There will be a fish release on Friday, October 24 at 12 pm at Colliery Dam. Catch a fish, take a photo of it and send it to parksandrecreation@nanaimo.ca to be entered into a draw for some prizes.

Invasive Species

Invasive plants like English Ivy, Scotch Broom and Daphne crowd out native plants reducing biodiversity, spread pests and plant diseases and harm other species that rely on native plants. Join a community work party to help remove them:

  • Sun, Oct 26, 10 am-12 pm at Colliery Dam Park (barcode 150774)

Please register in advance so that we can ensure we have enough equipment and supplies by calling Parks, Recreation and Culture at 250-756-5200 or online.

🌍 Sorting it Right

Properly sorting your recyclables—like plastics, paper and metals—helps reduce landfill waste, conserve resources, and protect the environment. Not sure where something goes? Use our handy “What Goes Where” tool to find out how to dispose of items correctly. Every small action adds up to a big impact when we all do our part to recycle right!
