This week...

Canada Day festivities take place, a call for the Temporary Public Art Program and summer has finally arrived (we think). Read on for more!

Design Commercial - Downtown Reimagined

This concept plan, endorsed by Council, sees improvements to Commercial Street integrated with other projects such as Diana Krall Plaza improvements, the redevelopment of 1 Commercial Street (former A&B Sound building), 6 Commercial Street (former Jean Burns property) and transit improvements along the 500 block of Terminal Avenue.

Watch the virtual fly-throughs and see the new concepts come to life in the video above. This vision is a result of some great ideas which came forward during the Design Commercial: Downtown Reimagined public engagement phases.

Call to Artists for Projects in 2023

The Temporary Public Art Program offers artists of diverse backgrounds and skillsets the opportunity to create artwork for public spaces in Nanaimo. Artists can propose artworks that vary in scale, scope, and medium, including temporary sculptural installations, social practice and community engaged artist projects and artwork that is integrated into landscape, architecture or civic infrastructure. For example, the public washrooms in Maffeo Sutton Park were recently painted.

The Temporary Public Art Program supports artists in the creation of new works, by providing necessary resources and staff support through the course of project development and realization.

The graphic above is a 2022 Temporary Public Art project currently in progress.

BEACH REPORTS

One Year of BYOB

July 1 marks the one year anniversary of bylaw 2020 no.7283, the Checkout Bag Regulation! For one year now, you have been BYOB - bringing your own bags. This is a great example of how a community can make an impact by keeping single use plastic bags out of our oceans, parks and landfill. Way to go, Nanaimo!
