Queens Way Manhole Replacement Project

Project Details: Construction remains underway at Queens Way Lift Station to replace the inlet manhole that collapsed in January 2023. The next phase of work requires some internal repairs to the lift station, replacing valves and piping and new relining of the inside of the wet well before the station can be brought back into safe operation.

Impacts: Traffic control measures remain in place with modified traffic flow on Queens Way and a 30km/hr construction zone speed enforced. Access to Pioneer Way will be closed to all non-local traffic for the duration of the project. The public is advised to take extra caution when travelling down Queens Way due to higher congestion around the construction areas. Please obey all posted traffic control signs.

Timeframe: Through December 2023.

PICKLEBALL AND TENNIS COURTS UPDATE

The new pickleball courts at Brennan Park are close to completion, with the courts expected to open November 4. The upgraded tennis courts are close behind, though a completion date for those is not yet finalized.

Contractors will be on site this week finishing the pickleball court work, and work over the coming weeks will continue to finish the tennis courts and surrounding landscaping.

TRICK OR TREAT AND GO WASTE-FREE

Halloween is almost here! Let’s have an eco-friendly spooky day this year and reduce waste with some simple steps. Go for Halloween decorations that you can reuse every year and avoid disposable decor. No need to toss all festive packaging in the garbage – many candy wrappers can be recycled as flexible plastic packaging at the recycling depot on Queens Way. Most importantly, keep those jack-o-lanterns out of the landfill. Use the flesh, guts, and seeds of pumpkins for tasty soups, sauces, and pies. Retired Halloween pumpkins go into the organics tote for composting as part of our curbside collection program.

COMMUNITY NOTICES AND EVENTS

Annual watermain flushing

Watermain flushing is underway and will continue through mid-November. Watermain flushing removes any stagnant water and unwanted build-up in the pipes.

Impact: During flushing, there may be brief periods when the water becomes cloudy, discoloured or has a mild chlorine taste, however, the water remains safe to drink. If you experience these, please flush your taps with running water until clear.

Requests for 2024 tote exchange

Are you interested in a larger or smaller garbage tote? The deadline to request to change your garbage tote size for 2024 is October 31.

Solid Waste Utility fees will vary based on the garbage tote size you choose. A $50 exchange fee will apply.

RESPECT SQUAMISH WILDLIFE

Bears are entering a very important time of the year as this is the last opportunity to pack on the pounds before the colder seasons. During the fall, they enter a state called hyperphagia, where they can eat thousands of calories but never feel full. This hyper-focus on food will make them especially active, prone to surprise, and protective over food sources.

  • Please be extra alert and aware when recreating – make sure you give bears plenty of warning that you are near!
  • Keep dogs LEASHED and on the trail – please do not risk either animal’s safety or your own!
  • Please make sure they are left to fatten up on natural food and NOT our garbage, fruit trees, or pumpkins. Help keep our community SAFE and keep the wildlife wild by managing all attractants and keeping your pumpkins out of a bear’s reach.

Tote Tips:

  • Store totes in a garage or shed.
  • Place totes curbside between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. only on collection day and never the night before.
  • Rinse out all recycling.
  • Freeze compost or dispose of it on collection day.
