WLNG Project Update: Public Comment Period Open to August 2

The public comment period is now open for Woodfibre LNG’s application to amend its Environmental Assessment Certificate to allow for the installation and operation of a second floating worker accommodation at the WLNG Project site.

The BC Environmental Assessment Office (BCEAO) public comment period closes August 2, 2025. The application and comments are available on the BCEAO website: https://engage.eao.gov.bc.ca/Woodfibre-A4

Memorandum of Understanding

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and the District of Squamish celebrated the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Tuesday at Sp’akw’us Feather Park.

The MOU is a historic step forward on the journey towards reconciliation between Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, the District of Squamish, and the greater community. It is a natural continuation of decades of cooperation between the two governments.

Mén̓mens ta smánit: Childcare Facility

Families in Squamish will soon benefit from 36 new full-time childcare spaces at the Mén̓mens ta smánit Childcare centre, a purpose-built centre co-located at Valleycliffe Elementary School.

The project is funded with over $2.5 million through the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund, which is jointly supported by provincial investments and federal funding under the Canada-British Columbia Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement as well as contribution from the District's Community Amenity Contribution reserve.

A community celebration is planned for September 2025.

The facility will be operated by Sea to Sky Community Services Society.

Dryden Wildfire

BC Wildfire Service has declared the Dryden Creek Wildfire to be out and the District of Squamish has now transitioned into a Local Recovery Period to transition from the immediate response phase to a more focused recovery phase. The Local Recovery Period can be declared for up to 90 days.

All Evacuation Orders have been rescinded and all trails in the Dryden Creek Wildfire area have reopened to the public.

A reminder that campfires are strictly prohibited on all public and private lands, including provincial parks and campgrounds. This now means that campfires are strictly prohibited at all provincial parks and campgrounds within the District of Squamish Boundaries and surrounding lands.

Notice of Local Events and Impacts: The Big Weekend 

Please anticipate the following closures on Cleveland Avenue on Saturday, July 26:

  • Pemberton to Victoria: 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Victoria to Main: 6 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Accessible parking will be available at two locations (see map):

  • Stan Clarke Park
  • Winnipeg Street

If possible, we encourage using active transportation — there will be a free bike valet at Stan Clarke Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. OR consider using public transit.

Traffic Disruption Notice: Mamquam River Dike

Please note, paving work will begin on the Mamquam River Dike (adjacent to the Public Works Yard) from July 28 until end of day July 29.

There will be no public access or parking on the Mamquam River Dike beginning the evening of July 27 for preparation work.

We understand the impacts this has on recreational activities, so we thank you for your patience while this work is being completed.

 

Notice of Traffic Impacts: Westway Avenue Paving

Milling and repaving work will begin next week from Monday, July 28, through Friday, August 1, along Westway Avenue between Birch Drive and Plateau Drive. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. New road lines will be painted once the paving is complete.

Please expect the following impacts:

  • Partial closure of Westway Avenue with one lane alternating traffic.
  • Temporary full closure of Westway Avenue may be required for short periods. Detours will be in place.
  • No street parking in the work area during this time.

This work is part of the District's Annual Paving Program for 2025.

Notice of Outstanding Property Tax Penalty

A second 5% penalty will be applied on outstanding property taxes and utilities after July 31. To avoid the penalty, owners should pay before July 31.

Curbside Tune-Up

The District of Squamish, in partnership with Squamish CAN is conducting curbside checks to help improve individual organics and recycling.

Auditors will visit all Squamish neighbourhoods for brief inspections of both recycling and organics totes through the summer.

Get in your Comfort Zone with Retrofit Assist!

Homeowners who are looking to make their houses more energy-efficient and comfortable have access to a FREE, one-to-one guidance session through the Retrofit Assist program.

Retrofit Assist will also work with the local construction industry to provide training and professional development courses so Squamish workers can benefit from the projected boom in retrofit activity in the future.

Homeowners interested in participating in Retrofit Assist are encouraged to visit retrofitassist.ca/squamish for more information.

2026 Permissive Tax Exemption Applications

The District of Squamish is accepting applications for Permissive Tax Exemptions. Section 224 of the Community Charter and the requirements of the District of Squamish Permissive Tax Exemption policy apply.

If your organization can demonstrate eligibility, you are welcome to apply for an exemption. The deadline to apply is July 31, 2025, for exemptions beginning for the 2026 taxation year.

The public comment period is now open for Official Community Plan (OCP) Amendment Bylaw No. 3139 (OCP Bylaw 3139) prior to consideration of second reading in the fall.

These amendments are Provincially mandated in order to align the District’s OCP with long-range housing needs identified in the Squamish Interim Housing Needs Report.
